Hey all.

I have been considering picking up an AR and have my RPAL. Now do I HAVE to be a part of a range to buy one, or can I be "looking" for a range to join? I know it doesnt make sense to buy an AR before joining a range, but dont want to drop $600 on a membership right now and want to acquire the rifle first.

Let me know.

Hey, I'm in the exact situation as you. You should mention which province you live in. Some provinces won't let you do that. But if you're in ONTARIO, good news. As far as I've been told by instructor and what is said around here... You can go buy AR and join club later. At least, just say you're planning to join whatever club.

Since you're quoting $600 for membership, I'm guessing you reside in Ontario.

Yes, Im in Ontario as well. If thats the case, the only other thing to decide is whether to spend 900 on a norinco or 2500+ on something else. Funny thing is, I have already been in this situation, but never followed through.

I'll need to check out the Norinco but I'll probably end up getting that just because of the price. But from user reviews, it ain't that bad. It shoots and is quite accurate. Fit and finish, well.. that's up for debate, but who's gonna know say from 6ft away? LOL

Talk about potentially being my first restricted... I hope others did this before me. Otherwise, CFO may have a field day on me?!? LOL!

$600.00 per year?????? the range i belong to asks for $25.00 year and i usually pay 3 years ahead. paying that much what do you get at your range??

WTH? $25 a year? Damn! Where do you reside, mg34? That's like free.

This range is about 30km north of Toronto and is indoor. When I buy an AR, I'll mention this club (Target Sports). But I think they're max range is 25 yards, and they just renovated the facilities. Took my safety courses there. Very nice place with store. I'll have to drive a little further up. I think membership is around $300/year for another club, but there's big first timer's fee. I think I need much more than 25 yards to play with rifles and ARs. :)

Yeah john im in the exact position as you. Do you think you will join target sports? $600 is a lot for just indoor, and the AR has much more potential than 25 yards. An indoor/outdoor range would be ideal, but seems hard to find.

On topic, the question was answered, an AR can be purchased without first joining a club, good news. Now another question, how long, on average will the transfer take ?

lazedout: I don't know forsure if Target lets us fire ARs... Do you know for sure? There are some clubs further north that has outdoor range, one that comes in to mind is Sharedon (sp?). It's much cheaper but supposedly, you need to own one share of the club and that will cost plenty and provided you find someone that will sell you their share.

I was considering joining, but b/c I'm going to own rifiles, I need outdoor too. No way I'm going to join two clubs. But I will mention target as a club I'm thinking about joining when buying restricted.

Yes, target sports allows you to fires AR's, they have one there to shoot. But outdoor is definitely a necessity but Target sports seems like the only real option as there arent many clubs.

ha ha, 600 bucks!?!?!

my range membership cost me 60 bucks in squamish, north of vancouver....

it has an outdoor range thats 250 yards or so, there building a trap range and rebuilding the pistol range, as that got removed when the highway construction company needed a gravel pit area...

You know what? Screw you :p

lol. Thanks for rubbing it in. I wish I could have cheap access to a range like that. I could buy another gun for the price of this stupid membership.

That depends on if it is a private sale or a dealer sale. I had my restricted out of Alberta in my hands in Ontario in 8 days and that included the 4 days it took for the dealer to get the item in stock.

What are you doing?

You mentioned $600 / yr. I'd love to know where you found that.... that's a bit extreme.
There are plenty of ranges around to check on drivable from Toronto.
Orillia gun club, Barrie Gun club, Oshawa Gun club, Burlington, etc.
Some are more reasonable that others and all have different plusses and minuses.

I've heard that the Norinco will shoot ok too, it's just that out of the half dozen i've seen / shot it hasn't happened yet , kinda looked like someone was shooting a shotgun with ssg's.

There are alot better choices , you can pay too much for a gun but you can definately pay too little as well, laff.

There is also the option of looking into the O.R.A we/they have plenty of options for shooting diciplines.

Also it is the gun club that you have a membership at that gets you your ATT, with out an active membership you DON'T get
a Long term ATT, but....... you could just sit at home and polish that new AR alot.

Target Sports will run you a little over $600 for the year, and they WILL allow you to shoot your AR platform; however, you MUST buy THEIR .223 ammo. Don't worry though, they won't charge out the ass like their rentals. Good luck with the AR. But if you're looking to shoot indoor, check out something more in the SMG platform like the B&T TP9 (which Target can acquire), or a nice shorty AR like 10.5" or less. Check out DLASK (Canadian made) for a nice CQB at a great price. Cheers

Just mention a club you intend on joining, you won't have any problems. But you will need to be a member of a club to get your ATT.

umm, it seems to me there are lots of other quality brand AR's for much less than $2500. Try a bit more research. I am in the process of building mine with an expected cost of around $1500.

Same here. My club membership was $25 this year, but they told me that every year afterwards would be $20. Apparently the extra $5 is for extra insurance as a new member. The range isn't much more than a gravel pit with backstops, fencing around the perimeter, and a bench at 50m and 100m, and only one person at a time may be on the firing line unless there is a range officer present. The great thing is, most members only use it during hunting season, with the exception of the restricted shooters, so you've almost always got the range to yourself.

My non-restricted range fee is $0.

I would gladly pay over $100 for a membership for an indoor range on PEI. I can dream...
