I was watching bbc news this morning and noticed that the Pakastani army uses the mg3a (update version of mg42) as their lmg. Saw it mounted on a chopper, jeep and carried. Talk about longevity. Still as good as they come, more than half a century later. Sham-wow Vince is right, the Germans do make good stuff!

The MG 42 was aptly named "Hitler's saw" because of it's high cyclic rate.It is still a very effective MMG/LMG in 7.62 NATO.

Yup, plus take a look at a Mag58 and then a Bren gun, side by side.
The Mag58 is simply the Bren, belt fed.
The MG-42 is a machine gun. the M60 is an abortion.
The M60 has a similar belt feed mechanism, but the designers failed to copy the best feature of it. For each fining cycle, the MG-42's belt feed advances the next round halfway on the rearward stroke and halfway on the forward stroke of the bolt, making for smoother, more positive feeding. The M60 advances the next round all the way on one stroke of the bolt (I can't remember which one).
The M60 has an action most like an FG-42 or a Lewis gun, only worse.
As for the FN MAG 58, the action is most like a BAR (rather than a Bren) with the belt feed of an MG-42.

similar feed mechanism maybe but thats about where it ends
the M60 is arguably the worst GPMG in created thats why they totally had to redesign it (it still sucked ) and the US went with the FN MAG
the 60 has alot of idiotisms ie
for barrel switches the bipod came with the barrel (kinda hard to do lying down ) not to mention it was prone to Runaway
The only gun i used that i was told by the DS to "firehose" as shooting in bursts was too hard on the sear

The only comfort for those of us without 12.6 is the knowledge that the glorious few that do, can't shoot 'em.

The FNC2 was a real comedown from the BREN. I suppose commonality of parts with the FNC1 made sense from a logistical point of view,but the BREN was/is a superior weapon. Too bad we did'nt just convert them to 7.62 like the Brits.
I used to enjoy shooting my BREN immensely,but the ATT suspension means it will probably remain a safe queen forever.

I love the MG42, I would settle for the MG3
At least I can take comfort in the fact you cant shoot it (wich sucks big time I know)
