So I sold some AA hulls - buyer says they are not what he wanted - so I offered his $$ back, but anyway, here is the issue:
What is the difference between a "compression formed" hull and a "HS" hull? His terminology. I have no idea....all I know is I bought Winchester AA Target loads and fired them off....and they are genuine AA hulls not the cheaper Winchester Target loads. So whats the diff? And how do I tell the difference?? Please advise. Thanks

I suspect it is the base wad in the shell; cheaper shells have a fiber base inside the plastic shell and there is a worry that it can come out.

cheers mooncoon

HS AA are the new generation of shotshell hull which is not identical to the old compression formed hull produced for decades. The newer is almost like a 3 piece assembled hull as opposed to a 2 piece compression formed hull. The new HS reloads but with different recipes. They're not always marked either. You may have to examine the inside with a flashlight.

The height of the AAHS hulls are different to the regular AA hulls. Most gauges require different wads I know for a fact that the 28 ga needed a whole mess of adjustments to properly get my 600 set up and reload them nice.

What gauge are the hulls???

@ types of AA 28 gauge HS Hulls, AA 28 HS and HS 28 gauge with a line under the AA HS ones with a line are shorter than the ones without...

The shell height difference did occur in early production 28 gauge AAHS. More recent production are the same height as the older one-piece AA.

Here' are two suitably chilled links to Shotgunworld where this was discussed.

The compression hulls are one piece of plastic compressed into the brass case head. Winchester has not made those in some years. The HS plastic is two pieces with a brass case head. You can look inside the HS and see a rim of plastic about half an inch up from the brass. In 12 and 20 gauge the hulls are interchangeable according to Winchester, Alliant and Hodgdon. In 28 gauge and .410 Winchester recommends a specific wad for the HS hulls.
