Thanks guys for the kind words. The build took me 4 months to complete ,as I had to make the stock and hand guards from scratch (laminated 2 x 3/4 baltic Birch to make the rough dimension 1 1/2" thick)then machine ,bandsaw and router the parts and re-checking fit many, many times then sand, sand, sand and sand some more.I only original part of the stock is the action portion, the rest was carefully cut off using my table saw and home made jigs (OBTW-the Chinese wood they use burns easily and smells worse !)
To hide and cover the original wood ,I used some 1/8 x 2" anodized aluminum stock and rough cut it on my band saw and machined the slots and stuff with a router and jigs(I tried to make it look a little more AK ,so added slots and stuff to make it look busy)The aluminum side plates were attached using West Systems epoxy and fillers and filled with the same ,then assorted machine hex screws etc. to hold everything nice and secure.I also added a thin 1/16 aluminum plate in front of the mag well ,mostly for looks.
The hardest part of the build was attaching the stock to the original wood action of the SKS (the bolt angle had to be exactly right ,so beer and assorted swear words were used as well as much head scratching)
The stock was finished using a mix of 3 stains mixed together ,then later tinted with gloss Varethane and stain.4 coats brush on and 4 coats spray on (from a can)
I added a polished piece of Cocobolo end cap and a brass screw to dress up the bottom of the hand grip on the butt stock.
To finish I used about 8 coats of DuraCoat (gun blue) using my badger 150 airbrush @ 15 psi. and an inline air drier. This was the first time using DuraCoat and must say I am very impressed.....GRERAT STUFF !
I think my next project will be some home made wood furniture on my next CZ858 ,as the one I have now has a folding stock and black handrails.....looks alright ,but I really love the look of wood. Not sure what type of wood i will use ,but then again ,I need another CZ first.
I will post more pics soon ,showing the various stages of the build as well as more of the finished gun.But you will have to excuse the quality of some of the photos.
Thanks again.
