Newbie problems with inline - please help

First I have to admit I have only fired an inline 3 or 4 times before taking my new Traditions Pursuit LT to the range. No one has ever really taught me what to do so I figured that I could fake it after reading a little online and whatching the odd video.

So I check the newly cleaned and dried bore, and fired a 209 down it to be sure. I then plopped in two 777 pellets, and topped them with a lead SWC in a sabot. This rifle is a virgin, and I was hoping to sight in a scope.

After getting the sabot all the way down (with ease) I etched a circle around the rod at the muzzle for reference. First shot was great. I had the scope adjusted pretty good already.

Second load - two more 777 pellets. This time I realize I can't get the rod down to the same depth. The line I etched earlier is at least a half of an inch higher. I'm a big guy, but I just couldn't get it to drop further. That shot was way off.

So I grab my little socket wrench, pull the plug, spray some Windex down, soak a patch in Windex and clean the bore. I dry it thoroughly, and follow with a 209 puff.

3rd load - The rod falls to the exact same depth as the first shot with a clean bore. Great results too.

4th load - can't get that damn rod down deep enough. It's at least half an inch higher. Im guessing the poor shooting results are due to weird pressures linked to a seating depth difference.

So what am I doing wrong? Do I have to clean up after every damn shot? Do I need to twist out the breach plug to clean it? Can I just clean from the muzzle, or would I just be pushing crap towards the breach plug?

Do I need to lube an inline bore if I use sabots?

yup clean after each shot and you will be fine.

dont take out the breach plug to clean untill you shot 10-15 rd's out of it. also you should be shooting 3 pellets with that gun if you want to shoot a deer more then 100yards away

to clean after each shot 1 wet patch and then 1 dry and you will be fine. you can use bore lube if you want ..

Most muzzleloaders change seating depth after the first "clean" shot. A half an inch sounds like a fair bit but a 1/4" is pretty common. If the bullet seats and it's a 1/4 inch or so, I wouldn't worry about it. I never clean between shots and often shoot 15 or more without cleaning.

This a what's known as the infamous 777 "crud ring".

When you're at the range....just "spit patch" between shots, and you'll be good to go.
Don't push on the load too hard, you don't want to crush the pellets.

Don't lube sabot's...they are meant to be shot dry.

I'm still amazed how damn tight the chamber area got after just one 777 load.

By the way, I was using Windex, is that kosher?

Try using the CVA powerbelts. They load very easy compared to sabots and provide a .50 cal projectile as opposed to a .45 cal sabot. They are pretty pricey compared to sabots but are worth it in my opinion.

That will work fine...but plain old spit, is easier.

I use patches that are damp with windex. Run'm down after every shot, and follow up with a dry one for good measure.

You'll see the same thing with Pyrodex. Interestingly, velocities don't change at all with the change in seating depth. As I say....much ado about nothing.
