New rifle ####... Weatherby Vanguard

The trigger is fine for a hunting rifle. I would say about a 3.5lb pull as set from the factory. It does have a bit of creep (I hear this is common with Weatherby triggers) but you get used to the take up with practice, and it breaks cleanly.
Since I am mainly gonna use this rifle for target shooting, I plan to get the trigger adjusted and hopefully lightened up to 2- 2.5 lbs.

I have measured factory Vanguard triggers at around 5 lbs. They also had far too much creep for my tastes, even for a hunting rifle. The trigger is the only negative on an otherwise very good rifle.Overall,it is still a good value for the price.

I guess in trigger the Savage has the advantage with the accutrigger in this price range?

I bet the guys who do the targets can really work that creepy trigger.

The Japanese are known for very good fit and finish. I would be curious as to the Howa branded rifles?

Congratulations on the new rig. I have always liked Vanguards and used to own the entry level synthetic ( now owned by a buddy who still enjoys it ) and now own the deluxe. Both rifles are very accurate with excellent fit and finish. The triggers do have a bit of creep and that's the only issue I can point to, but in the two I've owned I can't honestly say that this is a big deal.

Once again, good choince and enjoy the new set-up.

The Howa guns are great, too. They don't have the ported and fluted bolt nor do they share the same bolt shroud. The Vanguard triggers are adjustable, mine is right at 3.5 pounds and polished the sear, very smooth and crisp for a hunting rifle. They come "lawsuit ready" from the factory though.

The big plus for me over a howa is the fact that the Weatherby is a 24 inch barrel not a 22 like the howa

Thanks for the kind words fellas. Nice rig you've got there too h&h!

I found the trigger reasonably crisp but slightly heavy at what felt to be at least 5 lbs. It can be adjusted down to 3 1/4 lbs according to the manual and that's good enough, for me anyway.

I hit my local range yesterday (TMSA) but they had a rifle competition going on so I could only use the 50 yard range to sight her in. One generous member offered me his spotting scope (thanks Ray!) which got me on target in short order. The Hornady BTSP's in 165 gr were cloverleafing so here's hoping that extends to 100+ yards when I go next weekend. I'll post the results here.

For anyone reading this and still looking for their first rifle, as a new rifle owner the best advice I can give is come up with your short list based on the features and price you must have and then go hold the damn gun! If it doesn't "fit", all those features you thought you needed won't do you a helluva lot of good. My initial concern was that the Vanguard felt the best of the bunch but how would it feel under recoil. Suffice to say that I have no stitches above my eyebrow, my shoulder is no worse for wear and I'm counting down the days to next weekend.

Enjoy your new rifle! Looks like you had a lot of fun taking the pictures.
Shoot safe and shoot often.
The only thing better than a new rifle is a new rifle with a warm barrel.

I have a Blued/Laminate Vanguard in 300 WSM. It was not bought as a sub-moa rifle, but shoots there anyway. My pet load with the 180 Partition has averaged .86" for the last 5 groups. I couldn't stand the trigger, though, so swapped in a Timney. Works well now. I think they are pretty fair value for the dollar spent. Pleasant gun to shoot. I think this one has "moose" written all over it this fall! Regards, Eagleye
