Now that my 16" Stag 3H AR project is more then half way done. I'm starting to think of my next AR project, my plan is to only own 2 AR's No more.

I do like the the idea of doing a short barrel AR like a 10.5" or 11.5" in 5.56 nato 1-8 or 1-9 twist but does an 1" barrel length make a difference?
I Also do like a short barrel 9mm AR but getting some of the parts seems hard to come by.

Also maybe doing a 20" target AR build might be a better option, I could build a 20" fluted bull barrel upper. So many ideas

I'm starting to think I should have gone with a short barrel project first then built a target barrel upper later. As there is not much difference from 16" to 20" or is there?

any ideas as to which direction I should go next just & post your ideas. Lets make this fun and add a poll?

For me, if I was a mechanical whiz kid like you that could build whatever he wanted...I would go right out of the ball park with the next one.

I have heard of weird calibres like the .458 SOCOM, the 50 Beowulf and others. Taming it down there is also the 6.5 Grendal and that 6.8mm everyone is talking about.

6.8 spc

Everyone is talking about the 6.8? I have been looking at that caliber but have been sitting on the fence as I don't know what the availablity of it is like.

Ya,I've been down that road, I first built a 16" and didn't see the point in having another AR15... I now have 3 and starting a fourth...

10.5", 20", etc... we can't tell you what would be best for you, it's up to you and your personnal tastes. And most of all, nothing forbids you to build all the models you want.

As for my opinion, why not go for a DMR? You could get hits far down range, that could be fun... 18" barrel, FF handguard, nice scope, etc...

Here are a few issues I'm stuck on first I would love to do a 9mm project as for great fun & cheaper ammo, I find that buying a complete 9mm upper is close to the cost of a full AR rig in 5.56 and trying to build a 9mm upper I'm see a shortage of parts.

A question I have is there any difference in accuracy between 10.5" and 11.5" barrels in 5.56? and the same question with 16", 18" or 20" when it comes to target AR's if there is no difference in a 18" or 20" ? then shorter might be better the range I shoot at is 400 yard max unless I join another club.

right now I might consider dumping my Stag 3H upper for something else like a 5.56 short barrel set up or 9mm complete upper. that would solve one of my builds. Then look at a stainless target bull barrel upper in 5.56 for long shoots.

My goal was only to have 2 AR's one long & one short barrel.

Paulinski -- 9mm AR-15 is what I had in mind but like I said parts seem to be hard to find for a build. I do have over 2000 rounds of once fired brass I have been saving and 9mm is very cheap to buy or reload. So getting a 9mm would be great. mags a high priced for 9mm

zykopat -- the 18" / 20" barrel, FF hand guard, nice scope, bypod. is what I had in mind for a target set up.

buying a complete 9mm upper might be the way to go in this case. I do like the feeling I get from building stuff my self that's why I like doing projects. skilled in all master of none.
