280 Rem or 280AI

Obtunded,
Bypassing the 280AI to use the 284 would indicate that you were moving backward. Moving forward, you would stop before reaching the standard 280 and use the 284. Regards, Bill.

yup..the 280AI is faster than the 7mm Rem Mag..that's what you get when you cut powder capacity by about 10 grs...gotta love science like that...
I've had a 7 Rem Mag that did an honest 3350 with a 140...a 280AI will never match that in equal barrel lengths...the 280AI I built for myself was a 3100-3150 with 140's, and the 3150 load flattened primers..H4831 powder.

Sure, the 280AI will equal or beat some 7 Rem Mag factory loads but if a guy is handloading his 280AI, or planning to, I'm sure he'd be handloading his 7 Rem Mag also. No point in that comparison.

I have a few 7mm's, 7-08AI, 7 Rem Mag and 2 STW's and I'm thinking on another 280AI...can't have too many 7mm's...they're all good.

I've seen a 700 SPS SS (26" barrel) in 7mm Rem Mag chrony factory 150gr Power Points @ 3225 fps avg (rated @ 3090 fps ~ 24" test barrel)

This keeps going around and around....and around...

In my limited experience, using like bullet weight with what seems to be similar pressures, the 280AI will beat the 280 by 75 fps, and the 7Rem will beat the 280AI by 125 fps.

If you understand your rifle and ammo's basic trajectory, and apply (and validate) it to a ballistic-type reticle, the +/- 200 fps means nothing in the field out to 500 yards. As such, pick one..they are all the same.

How did the deer and other big game respond to your existing 280?

There are a few shooters out there that truly appreciate and comprehend the AI modification, but most guys just like to say "Ackley Improved."

I would stick with the standard .280. You won't be able to notice any significant improvement in trajectory or terminal effect. Another potential issue is that the improved cartridge may not feed as well.

That's pretty much it, eh Rick? When I sit a 30-06 round or 308 round beside a 7-08AI or 280AI it is by far cooler to stare at the AI's. There are a few things to debate, but in the end the AI's are really only like having a good car and making it a convertible.

pretty much the story I think.....you can go further down and up in velocity...

the 280 beats the 7-08 by 150-200fps and the STW beats the 7 Rem Mag by 150-200fps..and any animal hit with a 140 TSX at 300 yards out of either the 7-08 or the STW won't know the difference and the bullet will be in the dirt behind it no matter which cartridge it came out of.....

now...the 7-08 Ackley...there's a cartridge...:D...:stirthepot2::popCorn:

Ya a cartridge that wishes to grow up one day and be a .284:evil::nest:

please explain...

"why is the Sako extractor not flying out of the Tikka T3 like it does on the Rem 700?"

Rembo I know you have lots of experience so please explain your comment.

I've never had any experience with a Sako extractor exiting any rifle, but there is an ongoing debate over the merits, or lack thereof, of a Sako extractor installed in a Remington 700. Seems they have been known to leave the rifle and injure the shooter in the event of a case failure....the older 2 lug Sako has a rib on the bolt to contain the extractor in the action should the rifle experience a case failure...but when installed in a 700 there is no such rib to prevent the extractor from leaving the rifle in the event of a case failure....BUT, the Tikka T3 has the same extractor as a Sako and nothing to contain it should the Tikka experience a case failure.....but, we never hear of a Tikka T3 losing it's extractor...and I'm pretty sure with the number of T3's out there someone has experienced a case failure in one of them....so..."why is the Sako extractor not flying out of the Tikka T3 like it does when installed in the Rem 700?"

The only real point to the comparison is the reduced recoil and muzzle blast. I had a 7RM and found the noise to be offensive; no muzzle break either.

280 or 280AI

This is a great thread,I own both and like them both,so I can just sit back and......I had a 7mmMag 25 years ago,you could weld with the muzzle flash,it went down the road!I had a .284Win as well, but it was a mediocre shooter,so I flogged it to some guy in Alberta :D.I swore that was it with 7mms,but a 7mmSAUM followed me home last month,I am now trying to follow the Number 1 rule of custom builds:NEVER shoot the donor! Cheers,Mur

Can you explain this to me this is actually the question I should have asked?
