I apologize if my terms / language is a little off, I will do my best to describe my question.

Just got a new AR from a fellow member on here. my question is;

When I open the gun up (remove the upper receiver) and I tilt the upper receiver backwards , the bolt carrier slides out – it is not locking in place.

With my other AR’s, I have to pull the charging handle back and then the bolt carrier will slide out – when I push both in – they stay or “lock” inside the receiver.

Is this supposed to happen?
If not, why is it not locking in place

With the receivers closed, the bolt seems to cycle fine when you pull back on the charging handle – thus I assume it will fire (though I have not had it out at the range yet.)

Any thoughts?

Check the gasrings

Hey.

Sounds like your gas rings may be worn out.
To check the gas rings, take the bolt carrier group out of the gun, and put the bcg on end on a flat surface, bolt down. If the if the bolt slides into the bolt carrier from the weight of the carrier itself, the gas rings should be replaced.

X2.......and you DON'T need to make sure the gaps on the gas rings are staggered!!!! Just thought I would throw that out there.

It typically should stay in place, it might be out of spec. or maybe oiled excessively. First ensure that all the parts of the bolt carrier group are there (compare it with your other BCGs). Next try putting a good BCG in the problematic upper, and also put the problematic BCG in a good upper. You might be able to isolate the problem this way. Keep us updated and we'll try to help.

the bolt slides all over the place inside the carrier. if you tilt the bolt carrier back and forth - the bolt slides back and forth - back and forth...

Yeah dude, change your rings and clean inside the carrier. If all else fails get a new BCG, never hurts to have extras anyway.

You never specified and I hate to "assume" anything...

Is your newly received AR a .223/5.56 or is it by chance a 9mm AR? If it's a 9mm then the bolt does not "lock" the way a .223/5.56 does... the 9mm is a straight blow-back and it WILL slide back all by itself when the upper is removed.

Please confirm that your new gun isn't a 9mm.

QUESTSTAR

do you sell the required parts I seek?

also looking for some replacement springs the the end receiver plate hold in place (you know the very little ones that lock in the take down pins?)

You don't need a tight carrier to bolt fit for it to function - Does it cycle fine? If it does, I'd leave it alone....

Probably, but without knowing specifically the exact parts you "need" I can't really answer properly. It sounds like your "used" AR may have some potential issues. My recommendation is that you have it looked at by a qualified AR armourer or at the very least by someone who has a good solid knowledge of AR's and has experience properly diagnosing AR problems.

Once they have determined if there is a problem and what the cause of any problem(s) are, then you'll know what parts might need replacing and what is required to put the gun into proper condition. It may be that nothing is wrong and that nothing is required... but to determine that you'll want a qualified person to inspect the firearm first-hand.

That's my 2 cents worth :)

If you remove the firing pin and bolt cam pin, does the bolt flop back and forth in the carrier, without any resistance?
