257wby or 264win

.264 Win Mag

My pick would be .264 Win Mag because that's what I already did.... ;)

NAA.

Maybe I should have pushed mine a little more, I too used H870 and 140 sierras and was getting about 3090 FPS out of 25.5 inches. It shot awesome there though!

Maybe i would of grouped better at that speed, not sure. Sure didnt take long for the barrel to get warm and have the groups open up. Surely is not is not a gun to bring to the range by itself.

I'd go with the 264 too. The main reason is that brass or factory ammo will be more affordable than anything with "Weatherby" in the name. I thought about building a 257 Wby years back, but a sweet standard bolt-face A-Bolt SS action came my way and pretty well sealed the deal against the Roy offering.

I think there are more bullets available for the 264 and the 6.5 is really the darling of the LR guys right now so you can get some really superb high BC designs to try out.

Build the 264!! I have owned both, and the 264 is more versatile IMHO. I have reached 3250+ in a 26" tube with 140 Partitions/Retumbo without pressure issues, and that is one flat shooting round with plenty of residual punch way out there. The brass is so easy to make if you cannot fine 264 brass, just run 7mm Mag brass through your 264 FL die and away you go! Regards, Eagleye.

But both of your choices beg for a long tube and a rifle with some weight. Not a sheep rifle.

I'm carrying a Mark V Ultralite in 257.....26" barrell......definately a sheep rifle ;)

even worked on a charging black bear at 6 feet......Only time I've ever found a tsx......went in just above it's nostril....travelled the length of the body and was sticking out the pad of its back foot......no petals left

Probably not the best rifle for the bear scenario....but it worked

neither...go with the 7mm Rem Mag or the 7mm STW

With a 140 Partition of .264(.490 BC) and .284(.434 BC) as examples the 264 at 3200 is only .40" flatter at 500 and .10" flatter at 400 than the 7mm Rem Mag pushing the 140 Partition to 3250, which is easy to do...3300 is more like it which makes it flatter than the .264 to 500..past that range the 264 may pull away...

the STW pushing the 140 Partition at 3400 is 2.4" flatter at 500 and 1.6" flatter at 400 than the 264

The 264 is not as flat a shooter at "normal" hunting ranges as everyone imagines it is....there's a reason Remington's 7Mag overtook it in popularity very early in the 264's career...but, it is way "cooler" than the 7Mag....and "coolness" kills a ton of deer very season....

out of the two choices you mentioned...I'd take the 264 if for no other reason than the availability of heavier bullets in 264

They both share the same case which came from the 338 win mag and so on down from the great belted one.

actually the 257 predates the 338 by 14 years or so. and the 338 was a developement from the original winchester short mag, the 458. of course all of these are developments from the 375 H&H.
