Hi All,
Thinking of putting a GM barrel onto a stock 10/22.
If I were to get one from Fabsports (currently out) and it being a match grade would that affect proper feeding?

Getting a barrel at $170 plus tax is almost 2 hundy. So if I drop a little more I could get a Savage MKII FV.

Mind you, I use Dynapoints mostly so maybe it's not worth upgrading at all.

Opinions?
 
I rebarrelled my stock 10/22 with a GM 16" barrel, and am happy with it. Accuracy is all I wanted, got it.

It feeds perfectly with RWS rifle match and with Federal bulk, didn't try anything else.

A whole new rifle might not fix accuracy problem.
 
I put a 16 GM barrel on my 10/22, it's a really nice shooter now especially since I put in a bunch of trigger parts!

Unfortunatly it still doesn't shoot as well as My savage MKII FV, which was cheaper to buy than my 10/22, even without the extra money dropped into the barrel and parts.... I will probably have to bed the action to get better groups at this point.

If you are looking to have some fun and spend some money, buy the parts and "go for it" with the 10/22, if you want to spend the least amout possible & get a tack driver..... Buy the Savage!

If money is no object....... buy both, that is what I did! :D

I put my GM barrel into a stock 10/22 carbine complete with barrel band; because the GM is thicker I had to open the channel with dowel-and-glued-on-sandpaper.
Seems like I got lucky and properly bedded the barrel, and while the barrel band doesn't fit as well as it used to it is still there.

Re accuracy, how about this: if the barrel is securely bedded and clamped with barrel band, the action can move/vibrate without having any effect on accuracy, because the semi auto bolt floats anyway.

I shoot outside at 100 yards, there has always been some wind, so one of these weeks there will be a dead calm with no mirage and I will know how accurate it really is.

Is it a factory tapered barrel? Where did you order it from?
 
I think you need to decide which gun you prefer, the 10/22 or the bolt action. I put a Green Mountain barrel on my 10/22 and I like it, but I doubt I can match the consistency of my CZ452. But, I didn't buy it for that reason. I'm happy to shoot most of my shots into 1/2" at 50 yards using bulk ammo, and for a gopher gun, or playing at the range with steel flippers, that's all I need.

I have two 10/22's but just wanted to change it up a bit. Get both?Hmmmm....:cool:

I like the 10/22 but kinda craving a bolt action. I should put some variety in my life.
 
I've had a cz for years. I like the accuracy and simplicity. All I've done to it is a brooks trigger kit.
I've had a 10/22 for 6 months. It came with a GM heavy brl and a few mods to the action.
Since that time, I've changed the extractor, the charging handle, most of the trigger parts, firing pin, buffer, etc. Also, I've spent about $150 on steel lips mags and a loader. It is as accurate as the CZ or a Savage, but the 10/22 is a very expensive rig to get set up. If you have the money to do the upgrades, it is fun, and a good intro into amateur "gunsmithing".

If you love gopher hunting, the 10/22 is the better rig, at least it's what I choose when I go out.

Since you can only shoot 1 gun at a time (unless you go hunting with friends), if I were you I'd selectively spend some more money on the 10/22 until it's exactly what you want. The barrel, extractor, and hammer/sear probably being first.
 
My 10/22 with a Green Mountain barrel feeds anything I care to run through it, including Eley subsonic ammo. I can get dime-sized (and sometimes smaller) groups with Dynapoints at 50 yards. My understanding is that CCI Stingers are not recommended in these barrels, but hyper velocity ammo is usually less accurate anyway.

I would work with the Ruger rather than start with a whole new rifle. Given the aftermarket support for the 10/22, you will find it easier to get it just the way you want.
 
Fabsports is out of the GM Barrel? They where in stock when I placed my order last week, hopefully that means I got the last one.

Back to the topic at hand:

Snausages I was faced with the same question a few weeks back when I was wondering about buying a new 10/22 or simply upgrading one of my older ones. In the end I decided I could build the 10/22 I was thinking of buying for more or less the same price and in my opinion end up with a better rifle which had what I wanted in it and on it rather than picking one that came close.

stick with the 10/22. there is nothing funner than a semi for gopher shooting. my dad, brother, friends hate going with me because they all have bolts/levers and can't make the follow up shots that i can or have the mag capacity. by the time they've cycled another round in the chamber the gopher is dead and so is his buddy:) save the money and find the ammo the 10/22 likes and go have fun. spend some time and tinker with the trigger parts, bedding(both action and barrel if needed) and be smart when you buy parts. lots of places that sell them and you can get some good deals. I bought my .920 barrel and laminate 10/22T stock for $160! having a 10/22 doesn't need to be expensive!!

P.S. I took my mom out the other day and set her up with the 10/22 as my brother had her bolt gun. she had a blast and i had a heck of a time trying to get my 10/22 back from her.
