Additional deer tags (Ont)

That does suck indeed! My first zone of choice is 65, then 63b... Neither have supplemental tags... Ugh...

Cheers
Jay

This gets worse every year. WMU67 has 150 tags, antlered deer only. This used to be my meat tag...:(

I don't know if I'll even bother trying to get one, last year took me 9 hrs to get through on their stupid phone line, and there were 280 tags...

I hunted with a partner for five years in 63B and we each got 2-3 deer a year with additonal seals and could have shot more. Numbers of deer their the past two years has nose-dived, so it makes sense to do away with additional seals. Deep snow and coyotes is why IMO.

This year (and last) I was in 85C and they have 1500 additional seals available this year.

Ya - only 120 antlered extra for 64a bow and ML only. 5 years ago I think they gave out 6500 extra, any ###, any season.

Oh well - we fill the rifle only hunter's tags first in the camp and save ours for ML and bow  :D

pffft....theres only 1000 extra tags in the area i hunt

:D:D:D:D:D

that sucks that there arent any extras available for you guys. here in SW ontario there are so many deer kickin around that i see a few roadkills every week throughout the year and usually a new one every day during the rut/winter.

No extra tags for unit 43 (Manitoulin Island) either. Sh1t

I too found that odd:confused: They've been complaining for years of having too many deer, even despite increasing the number of tags.

IMO it's easier to get a deer by driving back and forth from Little Current to Wiki, than it is to shoot one:p

Eastern Ontario populations took a kicking the last two winters, I would much rather not have the option of getting an extra tag rather than not seeing a deer for 5 years.

x 2 with what fox said.
I hunt in 66a and 67 and the populations where I hunt have nose dived as well I know the boys took out 60-70 coyotes last winter!

I assume the call in still starts on the 20th for spares. I thought that if we phoned that 1800 # we were supposed to be able to find out if we hit pay dirt by now

I hope it still means a first choice for 65 will get picked, just not much of a chance if it
was someones second choice.
I have noticed that over the past two Winters,
that the extra snow was very hard on the deer.
Deer cant move through deep snow, but coyotes can.
While looking for sheds this Spring,
I found the remains of two dead deer.
Cant say for sure if it was Winter kill or coyotes that killed them.
I am sure coyotes benefited from them.
But with the deer populations down here in areas of 65,
will also mean coyote pop's may fall off.
Good for farmers, bad for coyote hunters.
Less food , means less pups born.

Just out of curiousity, how many deer tags can a Ontario rsident reasonably expect to get in an avereage season?

Depends on what area you are in, and what season, either bow or rifle or controlled hunt. Some areas 6 per person, some maybe a couple, some only one and as said above none! I have heard the same thing as Andy and Fox, last two winters here were harsh. Had talked to a ministry fellow up near Kenora, and the population is estimated at about half of what it was 2 years ago!

You get one tag (bucks only) when you buy your license. It is good for all of Ont. (with exceptions-limited draws etc).

The additional tags are available in certain "problem" areas. Anterless tags have to be applied for ahead of time (unless specified on additional tags)

I will only be getting one tag this year for WMU 65....4-5 years ago I had 4 tags.

And we have "party hunting" in Ont. (as much as I dislike it), so you can hunt the whole season if someone in your group has a tag.

*** YES,I know I'm going to get flamed for not liking party hunting ;)

We get 7 this year, but you have to move around a bit to do it. Helps stretch the season out. Maybe some more will get announced at the last minute again this year.
