FN Browning Mauser 98 Custom Ideas Needed!

Well, after a slight delay.. im back on track.

I am deciding between 9.3x62 and the .375 CT...

With regards to barrel, what contour should I be looking at? I am thinking i'll stick with a chrome-moly barrel, but should I be considering stainless?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Here are a few pics of the donor rifle..

Just do it up in 9.3X62 and never look back! I have killed a lot, many tons, literally, of really big game over the past 25 years with the 9.3X62, 375 H&H and 375 Chatfield-Taylor, and there is really no difference in killing power in any of them.

The 9.3X62 is essentially a 375 with five in the magazine, of which your Browning will handle perfectly without any modifications. BTDT

I haven't read all the previous posts so I may be repeating some one else...
I will also yell..
HAVE RON SMITH REBORE TO A 35 WHELEN OR 9.3X62 WITH A 1:14 TWIST AND THE THROAT & LEAD SET UP FOR CAST BOOLITS!!!.
ok
As for the bottom metal...If the one shown is made out of steel keep it and tone down the engraving...
I like that Browning!..:)

Hello gents,

I have the urge to build up a nice custom Mauser based on the receiver of an FN Browning High Power Rifle.

The action is of course... an FN Mauser. It is a long action, and the rifle is currently chambered in .30-06. The action is in fantastic condition, but the rest of the rifle is quite used. My idea is to salvage the action... and make an entirely new rifle.

My first question... is there anything I should know about this action specifically as far as limitations? I want a large caliber, that I know... what is the limit?

Right now I am undecided between two extremes.

1) The first idea is to build a classic Mauser based sporting rifle.. nice wood, nice bluing, classic caliber with an optical sight. Beauty will take precedence over everything else while still remaining very functional and versatile.

2) The second idea I have is to build the biggest baddest up close and personal rifle I can. Large caliber, synthetic stock, express sights (scope optional) tough weather resistant coating on the metal etc... Reliability and stopping power will be the number one concern.

Any ideas? I guess the most important question is caliber... What's the largest caliber I can stuff into this action?? I read (and perhaps I am wrong) that this action will handle the .375 H&H with some creative bottom metal re-workings.

I will post some pics tomorrow of the donor rifle...

Any advice and/or suggestions to sway me in one direction on another would be appreciated!

A 338-06 would be a nice build on that action without a lot of fuss. A Ruger 375 would require more fiddlin' around.

How about an 8.5x63? The Germans are using this cart and it is chambered by Blaser and Mauser.
Essentially it is a 338-06 blown out, with the shoulders further forward than the 338-06 AI.

9.3 X 62, and I believe there is a Canadian dealer (not sure if they are a CGN sponser??) selling pre-threaded Heym barrels, at very good prices.

I have a 98 action that might be waiting for maybe the same combination, and will go with a chrome moly barrel to keep the classic looks.

If I'm not mistaken, it's "bits of pieces" that sells Heym barrel...

Keep the Mauser action. If you're going to build a nice rifle, why use a push-feed economy rifle action?

Again - use the Mauser action and build a classic 9.3 x64 or 8x68 and never look back.

You can load up or down depending on your needs - but you will never be undergunned

First let me say that it is your rifle do as you wish, a lot of good ideas by other posters. I looked at your pics. several times and if it was mine I would do the cosmetics, re - finish the stock, re-checker, re-blue & whatever else (re-bore) but leave it at least "looking" original, they are getting scarcer.
