Ontario's nuisance bear problem could become a lot worse. Presently nuisance bears are roaming the streets of Huntsville, Bracebridge, Gravenhurst every night foraging garbage pails and dumpsters. The MNR & bear catchers are running their behinds off responding to calls. And it's going to get worse. With the U.S. economy in the tank very few Americans are booking bear hunts this fall with the operators of the Bear Management Areas. So with no spring hunt and the potential for a much reduced fall hunt watch out next year. I hope a lot more of them move into the GTA.

The city (Toronto) went bananas when there was a coyote spotted in the 416. I have no doubt they would call in the Army if a bear made it down there. The truth is I'd feel sorry for the bear being stuck in that sh*thole.

Actually there have been a couple. One in the Pickering area - half dozen police cars and a hellicopter - ongoing news updates. More recently there was one up a tree north GTA - Woodbridge if my memory serves me. Same thing - police, firetrucks, animal control, ongoing news updates on CFRB. They finally darted it.

That was 5 minutes from my house the one at Neville Park? My investment guy made jokes about how city folks want to catch it and release it in the wild while his cousin a countryman has 50+ coyote pelts hanging in his barn.

The bear problem is scary, I like to run and bike up north and not only does the local land owner not allow hunting but our Garbage collection used to be at a bin by the end of our dirt road now they do it at the front of everyones driveway. (This is a cottage dirt road and driveways) anyways now bears come in very close to people's cottages. While I know brown bears aren't known to be real killers there are often many children playing around alone and like I said I run and bike bears have been spotted with cubs on the same trails I do so. I know basic "bear defense" but it would be a whole lot nicer piece of mind if they just weren't there something that likely would have been so if the bear hunt is restarted.

all the animal lovers can go pet the bears that make it to the big stink.... the bears would love millers strike.... a dump on every corner

Since the poor buggers are going hungry here in Northern Ontario because the moose calves are big enough to outrun them now and the berries not quite ripe maybe we can get P.E.T.A. or the Shad foundation to supply cattle trailers to ship the live trapped ones down to Trawnta!I see on the news theres lots of good pickens for them there.Just a thought.................

It has been 'worse' here for quite some time.........only difference is the MNR knows rural people will deal with the problems themselves. The Circus that follows everytime a bear nears the GTA is not good for the MNR's 'bear management plan'

Hey...

If 1 poor MOMMA Bear gets shot....her cubs will be orphaned.

The Bear population is so delicate and Bears are such curious, cuddly creatures that we can't afford to have ANY orphaned cubs.

I am all for banning all Bear hunting....these marvelous creatures should NEVER be hunted.

my city is going to have alot of bear roaming around..... we just introduced a composting program where you put all your compost etc in a little plastic bucket at the end of your driveway.... to be picked up lateron by a compost truck.... dinner is served!!

there are brown bears in ontario?

It is not politically correct to say "black". I think we are allowed to call them "non-white" or "North American" bears.

lol:)

isnt that what they call the Circle of Life?
why pay someone to take your compost to some designated site when a bear will do that for free? as long as the bear does shit in the woods, of course:)

Just got around to scanning this - from our town (Sudbury, Ontario) paper last month - OUCH! Probably took about a millisecond swat to do the damage. Yep - we got bears all over round here. Can turn nasty on occasion.

"Something bit her, it was big and black"

kind of like the police getting a description: he was tall, had blue jeans, white shirt, black running shoes but it was dark outside when i saw him. If you see this guy please call your local police detachment. that could be anybody!

How long was the bear from a$$ to nose? 12 feet

How much did it weigh? 2000 lbs

How tall was it when it stood up? about 15 feet tall

Was it a boy bear or a girl bear?
it never told me

Can you remember any special markings on it? it had black hair

Did the bear have any weapons when you saw it? yeah lots of teeth and claws

What were you doing when you saw it? My yappy little dog was on the trail and chased it away then the bear chased my dog

What did you do then? I kicked the bear and it swatted me

What would you like done today? go out an get THE bear that swiped my leg

thank for your time, we will be searching for the bear.
