is this plastic top gas tube rail sturdy enough to mount a scope?
seems so but i need reviews from others
what type scope would you mount?

Id like a red dot but my eyes arent the greatest so im thinking some sort of magnified scope BUT woldnt a magnified scope betoo far away to look through if mounted onthe gas tube?
is there such thing as a 4x or so red dot ?

It is sort of sturdy. I have used a red dot on it in the past, but I wouldn't put glass on it and expect it to hold zero. It will frustrate you if you try to put glass on it.

thanks man, red dot it is...
any half decent "budget priced" red dots in canada i should look to buy?
do red dots come in any magnification?

a cheap red dot would be leapers or tasco.....49.00. they are to bottom of the barrel but good enought for ####ing around at the range or bush. The gas tube mount won't hold a zero....put a sight on it and you will be able to move it slightly side to side..no good.

I'm grinding off that stupid mount the first chance I get. ANY mount made from plastic over a heat source is not going to hold a zero.... period.

Besides, it interferes with the issue sights.

AFAIK some ppl complain about metal creep in aluminum mounts, and use steel mounts only. Can't see how a piece of plastic can hold zero, plus the tolerances/play of the gas tube itself. Then again, how accurate is a red dot? I donno much about it myself, but seems like a dot that is 2-3MOA will be useless past 25yrds, no?

Like I said...it won't hold a zero.

Accuracy of a red dot depends which one you are talking about. The ones I mentioned above are 50/50, close range stuff only.

that being said are there any half decent aftermarket iron rear sights for a SKS, my eyes suck and i cant see jack when using the stockers.

Nothing beats these;

Even if you have a tapco stock.

I've had a bushnell red dot on the tapco plastic rail for almost a year... it holds zero very nicely... even after I take it apart and put it back together for cleaning. as long as the fit is tight you wont have any problems.
