Is this overkill.........

Nope... Not at all. I was hunting gophers with my 300 WIN MAG at one time. The down side to using that caliber is I could only handle 4 rounds and that's it I'm done for the day. Where as my buddy kept shooting away with his 22-250. The other down side was I couldn't see the explosion of them gophers through the scope with that amount of recoil. I take the pain and my buddy gets to see the aftermath... not fair.

Not much meat gonna be left on them wabbits unless you take head shots only ...

I hate the idea of wasting perfectly good meat, but that's just me.

The Eastern Cottontail is an introduced species here and are considered pests. They are so full of parasites and gooey slimy things under the skin that it creeped me out to even clean them. I noticed they smelled bad most of the time from whatever possible disease and or parasites they were packing around under the skin. The reg's here state that they can be killed anywhere anytime, so I make target practice out of them at every opportunity. If I was in the prairies no one would expect me to eat every sod poodle I blasted.:)

Must be a local problem, cottontails are delicious out east. Mind you, they eat clover over here.

That's right, they are not indigenous to Vancouver Island and probably have some genetic difference that makes them prone to disease that makes them stink badly.
I have eaten lots of rabbit before, but hese lil furballs have a stink that will knock a dog off a gut wagon.
I shoot'em with any large caliber, bang --poof, no more smell.
I wait around for the crows to show up and have more target practice.....:shotgun:

Bullets are for pussies.
