I need a reasonably good quality rimfire scope for my heavy barrel .22.

I don't even know why rimfire scopes are a different category than centerfire scopes!

I intend to use it for bench and maybe some hunting. I am thinking 3x9x40 and up for some long (er) range bench shooting. Just wondering if this can be accomplished for around $150?

I just red in an article that "A high power variable scope with an oversized objective is too heavy and bulky, and is a poor choice for a .22".

The article referes to likes of 4x12x40 as an example of "heavy and bulky".

Two people, three different opions. Best way is to hit up a store and take look at some choices.
Good start are Bushnell Banner, Legend and Trophy series which are in $100-200 range. Mueller, Vortex have similiar products in the price range.

I like the Mueller APV 4.5-14x40 AO. Very clear optics for the money. I was impressed with being able to see 22 cal holes in paper at 200 yards, its held zero and the view remains clear under various lighting conditions. Costs around $230.00. I have one on my 22Lr and another on my 223.

I have a bushnell banner on my 10/22T and have been very happy with it. They only thing I dont like about it is the adjustments on it for wind/elevation now. I got so used to my tactical knobs now on my other rifles when I used my .22 on the weekend I had to really pay attention to my clicks.

1) The person who wrote that article should start hitting the gym.
2) This is the common belief for walking/hunting rifles and ha merit for that application only
3) You still get old timers who believe you don't need anything more than a fixed 4x for any rifle no matter what.

There are multiple classes/roles for rimfires. A competition BR rifle and you want the most magnification you can get. 36X etc. Heavy varmint/target rifle then 6.5-20x or around that magnification level. Walking hunter rifle 2-7x, fixed 4x, 3-9x etc. In most cases lighter is better, and less magnification for a better field of view.

Anyone who makes a broad statement about only needing low magnification, doesn't understand the many specialized areas. One size really doesn't fit all.
Pick the appropriate scope for the application.

Good comment.

I think I am tilting toward a mid level 3x9x32 Rimefire. Should do well both on the bench rest for 100 meter targets, and occasional walking-hunting situations.

a leupold on a rimfire.. unless ur hard into your competitions then pretty sure you wont need one.

use leapers.. cheap.. good range of optics.. you'll be shooting at 200m and under probably..

its a .22

i use one on my .22, .17HMR and my old M14 .. no problems ever

scope

I would think minimum would 4.5 x 14 but thats just my opinion , 100 yards at 9 power is pushing it for me, and I have shot a few targets and gophers at 100 yards.

Home you are putting it on a heavy barrel rifle, heavy bulky is what you are going to find for $150.00. FS

Start looking for something used. Cheap optics make me cringe.
There are lots of awesome older sights for sale that will blow a modern cheapy out of the water. Try searching the EE for the following:
B&L Bolvar, 3000, 4000
Weavers made in the US
Leupolds of any vintage

Cheers,
Grant
