CMMG Quality?

These are too new here for anyone to give you reports yet... we only just started selling them in Canada the past few weeks.

They have been previewed in the US earlier this year and finally started shipping quantity in the US about 6 to 8 weeks ago. So far the feedback we've been seeing in the US forums has been VERY good.

Your best bet is to check AR15.com

... or buy one and see for yourself. The price is better than any Piston Ar we've ever seen before and the features and quality appear to be excellent from what we've seen of the units we have here.

I've had a CMMG upper 1:7 but sold it a few months ago..So I know there's a few in here and have been up north for a couple years.

I have zero first hand knowledge about CMMG but from reading here and there they seem to be getting descent reviews on their AR15s.

The gas block attached to the barrel by pins is better than the other piston systems but the rest of the piston design I have no idea about it, not sure if its their own design or if they are using someone elses piston conversion kit.

Not a bad price and Questar are good place to buy from and good for support if you have a problem down the road.

I wish they had as good a deal on the PWS Diablo uppers as this one.

I was about to order one , but read some reviews on M4carbine and decided not, too much 50/50 for my taste...will stick with LMT , even if they are DI and more expensive

Mark and the Questar Team have oustanding service on everything they sells anyway!!! :D

Yeah, just read the same stuff.....we'll see.

Can you expand? I've heard of un staked carriers and out of spec parts

Carriers that we've seen have been staked and staked properly... for an example look at the pictures of the 20" CMMG Uppers we've got listed on our site...

As for "out of spec parts"... I don't know of a single AR manufacturer who at some point in their "history" hasn't had a batch of "bad parts" get out into the market. Given enough time and you eventually see "everything" or so it seems. I have personally seen brand new AR's with "problems"... from LMT, RRA, Bushmaster, Colt, Spikes, DPMS, Olympic Arms, Stag and more. But in almost every case those were (in my opinion) "exceptions" not the "norm". The only product line that I consistently saw issues with was Olympic Arms and the biggest reason we stopped carrying their stuff was that the company didn't see those issues as problems... this told me that they considered the problems to be acceptable. Every other manufacturer took immediate steps to correct the mistakes.

While I haven't specifically seen that with CMMG, I would not be surprised to hear that somewhere sometime someone got a bad part. It happens... but so far our experience with their products has been excellent. They are "spec" parts and very well made... they buid their stuff right... at least the stuff we've been getting has been (so far) top notch.

The other point to remember (with the new Piston guns) is that (as an example) the key is machined as part of the carrier so there's nothing to stake... if someone has told you that the piston rifle did not have a staked key/carrier then I guess technically it's true but only in so far as there is nothing to stake :)

Yup, roger that. Just looking for opinions. The staking isn't a big deal I just think that when you pay someone over a thousand dollars for something attention to detail is pretty important. And yes, I'm well aware that this piston rifle has a one-piece carrier.

..........IMHO I am amazed that Olympic Arms is still in business. I took a tour of their factory and it looked like a By-Way for guns......uppers/lowers tossed in buckets waiting for quality control inspections......They had a new rifle resting on a piece of sandpaper on one of their counters.

BTW, Will you be stocking CMMQ parts? I'm mainly thinking of pistons.

We carry a lot of parts but not every part from every manufacturer. CMMG is very good when it comes to warranty... if we need a part for warranty service they send it to our US office and it's usually here within 2 to 4 weeks.

Keep in mind that we have complete rifles here so if necessary we can take a part from one of our stock guns and replace it later when we get the part from CMMG.

I was wondering the same thing. I heard that Daniel Defense makes a specific version of the omega rail for pistons.....some kind of relief cut in the upper portion of the rail system.........

I heard something like that. Its uses Omega rail with large diameter, but I don't think Daniel Defense sell it though...

Good Quality

I had the chance to see one of the CMMG Piston carbines pulled apart this week and I am impressed. I too had heard some mixed reviews but in the end we all know that opinions are like "a**h@!$&", everybody has one. The bottom line was that this thing was done right as a piston gun and not as a conversion. Bolt/carrier was excellent quality, chromed and one piece. Very nice. Receiver machining and cut quality was excellent as was the finish. The one piece solid gas block was fit very well. I own a couple of LMT's, had Colts and custom stuff and these are almost every bit as nice. Excellent quality pins and hardware, everything seemed pretty MilSpec quality as far as durable is concerned. M4 feed ramps, no rough surfaces inside the receiver and the upper and lower were a nice snug fit (no rattles). These are one of the best value for dollar Gas Pistons on the market. I will buy one and run it hard, it appears it is built for that. (Hey Mark, any discount for the good review!!!!)

Rails and accessories, be careful, the OMEGA by Daniels does have a special "Piston" version but they say not to use it on CMMG or POF pistons. Use the standard size OMEGA for those Piston guns it apparently fits. I have seen some pretty bad AR's lately from other manufacturers and importers but this is a nice piece. It sells in the $1050.00 to $1250.00 U.S. Dollar range south of the border which is a hell of a good deal. Even after import and exchange this is a good deal for a quality piston carbine when you compare the price of some the S&W, Imperial Defence and others Direct Gas Imp. AR's on the Canadian market. BTW this is just another opinion, backed by some look, see, feel, touch.
