First day out shooting - good and not so good

Ok so I bought a CZ75 in 9mm and a S&W 686, 357. I went to the range for the first time since buying them and shot. I have only shot a handgun once before.

Now shooting the CZ was tough. I found it hard to get any type of group at 15 yards. Most of my shots were low to middle and to the right. Wide spread.
I found this tough but I already knew I needed to pratrice, being so new to shooting handguns. Maybe next time I will be better.

Now shooting the 686, regardless of whether it was 357 or 38 I was shooting was easier. 2-3" groups and most were just above center, a few flyer's but I was really happy overall with what I was getting with this pistol and being so new.

I need help with this CZ thing as I did not get any group, but at least I was on the paper....:redface:

The worst day shooting is still better than the best day at work....lol... :p

Pretty good for first time out. Try shooting at 7 or 10 yards. Then move the target further out as your groups get tighter. Were you shooting single or double action with your 686?

15 yards was the closest back stop at the range. I was shooting double action with the 686 but no rapid fire. I just tried to shoot one controlled round at a time and then looked at where it hit the paper.
 
Shoot as close as possible until you get a good feel for it. Once you've got a couple thousand rounds in up close, you can get further out. I'm currently at the 50y limit of my range, busting clays better than 50% of the time, through my Super Blackhawk, and about 30% through my Glock. The most money you'll ever save, is spending $3-500 and buying a rimfire handgun. $22 for 525 rounds, will defintely improve your shooting.
