Hey guys, I wanna know a little something here just to know what would be best:

Some peeps tells me NOT to clean my .17 HMR  (a Savage 93R17 BTVSS w/thumbhole and laminated stock) but to clean it only if it loses some accuracy....

Some others tells me to clean it every 50 rnds or so....

I want some advices from my good .17 HMR experts on CGN to light my candle a bit!!!!

So basically, what would be best?

Clean the bolt after each use. Clean barrel once your groups start to open up. Don't use a brush` use patches and a copper/powder solvent.

Cleaning every 50 rounds seems a little excessive to me, I usually just clean the bolt after every outing (150 rounds) then throw one patch of solvent through the barrel and call it a night

I just got a 17 and plan to clean it with patches only (no brushes) every 100 rounds or so. This could change depending on how my experience goes, but from what I've read brushes aren't necessary nor is heavy cleaning on these rifles.

I would clean it after I notice accuracy going usually around 100-120rds or so. I find that the chamber gets a little sticky after a bit or if the shell don't extract a smoothly I usully run wet patch with solvent on it until I get a clean patch.

RWS sells a kit, and use cotton pellets pushed thru...also avail in 22, very nice cleaning method with solvent, clean, and lubed pellets.:D gets it done.;)
I also use a plastic bore brush , which I 'am in need of quality non metal brushes.
Not a bad idea, to have along a few q tips, and a small amount of solvent.

Went to the range today and I gotta say, this thing is a tack driver. I did 5 shots into a dime @ 100 yrds EASY. But I noticed as well that this caliber burns DIRTY as hell. I cleaned the barrel after the 5 first shots, then after two 5 rounds mags then after three 5 rounds mags....now it goes like a hot knife into butter and loads and ejects flawlessly.

Once I arrived, I removed the bolt and cleaned it and brushed it a bit, to remove all the dirt remaining on it. then back to the safe with me having a bigggggggg smile on my face!!! That's what I call a good day!

What's going to cause the corrosion?

Actually I had no idea and was too lazy to Google at that time...that's why it was a guess hoping for a quick answer. After Googling a few minutes, looks like smokeless powder, unlike black powder, is non-corrosive...so there goes my theory. :D

I guess really the biggest enemy to my bore would be rust/oxidization...which should spur me to keep it well oiled. Thoughts?

I run a patch through about every 100 rounds then give it a good cleaning after summer when i put it away ( mostly just use it for groundhogs in the summer) hummers do foul the barrel pretty quick, some guns shoot better with a dirty barrel, some with a clean. the place i bought my 17 said to clean it every 15 rounds. I told him im not carrying oil and rods out in the field with me, accuracy doesnt seem to drop off even at 100 rounds.
