A new .45

I had S&W 4506 and loved it. Still regret selling it. It was extremely accurate and ate all the crappy reloads that I fed to it. My friend's Para Ordnance could not handle half of the ammo that my 4506 could. But it is quite big and heavy. If I was a police officer, I would not want to carry one. The only gun I like more is Sig 220 in stainless steel.

I'm pretty sure I'll pick up the 4506. We Can't Carry so for what I'll be using it for:D, weight really isn't a factor.

While I don't have any experience with them, I see that S&W makes a couple of 1911s without forward slide serrations and a standard guide rod, which is what I prefer configuration-wise:

Having Dlask build you a gun may also be worth looking into. Their base model isn't that much different in pricing compared with Kimber or S&W and I imagine that Dlask would put a little more care into assembly, compared with a mass-produced pistol.

For Reliability & Quality:
Any of the 1911's models listed by the others above (STI, S&W, Colt, Kimber, CZ, etc.) will give you that. You can't go wrong with any of them.
For Looks:
Well, personally I like the classic look of a blued Colt Series 70. You're just going to go out there and hold a few, take a gander, see what you like. It's all personal taste.
Other 45's:
I've had the S&W 4506 w. adjustable sights, looks cool, (Crocket had one in Miami Vice, just after he had his Bren-10) fun to shoot, The HK45 looks pretty cool too.

If it was me and my bucks...I'd stick with Colt, probably something from their custom shop. :)

New .45ACP 1911...

Best bang for your buck is likely an STI Spartan bought from Armco.... ;)
