How often do you guys clean your rifles? After every use? When they get really dirty? And how long does it take?

Is it the same as my glock that I usually just clean very quickly when I feel like it?

Are most guys using CLP? Right now I am using G96 and RemOil primarily, I got the lubrication points down, but I am just wondering about the best way to clean the bore, the upper receiver and lower.

Anyone want to share their procedures/techniques/tips?

I clean my AR after every range trip. I clean my glock in 30-40 mins and the AR takes me about and hour and half. There are alot of nooks and crannies on the AR, make sure you get the carbon of the boat tail. I use Hoppes #9 solvent for the barrel cleaning, and CLP everwhere else. Also I put CLP in the barrel for storage. Dont stick anything into the gas tube. Go get a big box of q-tips, they are very helpful. Also you want to invest in a chamber guide and a nice coated rod (I use Dewey). I only use phos bronze brushes. I would not use brake cleaner!!!

I've cleaned a C7 with nothing but leaves and twigs in the span of a few minutes. You don't need to scrub out and spit polish every last nook and cranny as if it were brand new from the machine shop you know.

Of course, if thats how you really want your AR to be, that's your choice, its just that, wow, thats a lot of time cleaning.

+1 with CdnCombatMedic.
It takes me around 1-1/2 hour to clean and lube my R-15 VTR after every range trip. But I use nylon bore brush with AR bore guide and one piece coated rod. My homebrew EdRed and CR-10 seem to work fine for cleaning the rifle bore. Anybody else may spend less time cleaning their AR, but I just enjoy doing this as well as reloading the ammo. It's one of my hobbies.:D

It's really up to you. You can clean for hours every time, but a decent AR will be reliable with decent ammo and minimal maintenance. If you take it out and only fire a a couple hundred rounds than minimal maintenance should be enough. 1000+ and a detailed cleaning is a good idea. Hoppes is great to clean with, and even regular gun oil or remlube, or mobil-1 will work to lubricate and preserve. If you leave the working parts well lubricated before firing, most of the carbon will wipe off easily.

Some guys spend too much time cleaning and not enough time shooting...

My AR gets a good cleaning once in a blue moon... Between matches all I do blow out the chamber, maybe pull out the carrier/bolt and give it a wipe.

No use being so anal about keeping it clean... Fire one shot and she's all dirty again anyways...

.....Should take 5min. to get it operationally clean

We arnt talking operational clean unless you got some crazy stuff going on in your backyard. When you have the time you might as well do it properly. everyone has their level of cleaning but when you pay close to 2000 on one, a bore snake just doesnt cut it nor a 5 min cleaning. Just my opinion. Key is keeping the thing wet with CLP or a good lube!!!!

LOL what did you use the twigs for?? Im just curious

Well, honestly, I can't see spending 1.5 hours to clean my AR, 15-30 minutes I can do, anything more than that probably won't happen.

My glock takes 10 minutes to clean & lube....no more.

Thanks for the advice though, I do use hoppe's on other guns, just seems to me everyone recommends CLP for the ARs. I should get a quality coated brush, got add that to my neverending things to buy list :)

So far, I have had it out twice. I cleaned the bore with a tornado brush once, and just with patches and jags the other time. Both times I cleaned the bolt and lubricated all the necessary points.

As a side note, I will usually take a little extra time lubing my guns if I am shooting in wet weather or wet conditions.

Holy s**t!
90(!) minutes to clean an AR...after every range outing!
30-40 minutes for a Glock!
Either you guys are doing it 'by the book', and the remaining 99.999% are a bunch of slack asses...or else you're taking "Cleanliness is next to Godliness" to a whole 'nother level!
Guys...these are tools which need to be maintained..not used to perform surgery on!
I considered myself a bit obsessive about giving my guns a bit of service after most range outings...but you guys are giving Obsessive Compulsive Order a bad name!

lol I clean mine after every 500-600 rounds, so Ill do a thorough cleaning after every 3 range trips. Ill just lube it very well before I start shooting at each range session. No need to spend an hour doing a thorough cleaning if you just fired 100-200 rnds:D

All you have to do is keep a small amount of CLP on pivot and moving parts. Should not take you more than 5 to 10 min to clean after a days shoot. The most imnportant part to keep clean is bolt head and keyway. As for a thorough cleaning, I only do this when I put my rifle away for a few months.

I've decided to not clean mine until I see malfunctions. and only add oil/grease where/when needed. Lets see what happens.

Cleaning

Hi Guys
You should really try Gunzilla,The US military has a contract to use it over in the middle east and have found they get approx 75% less FTF. The FBI just started using it too.

I'd rather nail my balls to a table than spend 1.5 hours cleaning MY OWN ar-15.

Do you guys give yourself defaulters if you find carbon during your white glove inspection?

Takes me about 1.5 hours to PROPERLY clean the AR. Can't see it being much quicker, unless you're doing a half-assed job. JMHO.

insert blackhawk down or Full Metal Jacket DVD, hit play, then spray solvent on all parts of the gun, let it act for like 2-3 minutes, brush through the bore/chamber, run patches until it comes out white, run a rag in the upper receiver, clean the bolt/bcg with solvent, rag and a brush, oil the gun and grease moving parts, reassemble, function check, resume watching blackhawk down or full metal jacket?

takes less then half the movie to do that.:D

Onagoth, G96 is what I use too, it's less aggressive as a cleaner than Break Free CLP, but who's in a hurry? I'm done with cracked fingers from Break Free CLP.

I give the inner/bolt/bore a spray down with G96 after a session, pull it out a few days later and wipe off whatever has sweated off. Then I give another light spray of G96 and put it away again. Give a pull through with a clean patch before shooting it next.

The longer you wait to clean a CLPed up gun, the easier/quicker the cleaning. This my take on normal, run of the mill care of a gun I fire regularly.
