Ruger Compacts...got one??

Any one else notice how much nicer the fore end taper is on the new crop of "Hawkeye Compacts" - not nearly as clubby it would seem.

i am looking for a frontier in .243, all frontiers have been discontinued and are unavailable... please pm if u know who has one:(
Fellow CGNers, this is getting silly. The only purpose, having those Frontiers, is to get out from the truck, with rifle, as quick as possible. Road hunting? No, thank you. Do not get me wrong, I like Rugers, and I like short barrels. 243 Win and 16" barrel? I had one with 20" and sold it ever so quickly! What is next? 264 Win in 14" barrel?

What an ignorant, short sighted and completely idiotic post.

Maybe you werent aware, but we don't all live in the praries...Canada has a lot more terrain than a million acres of nothing.....pick up a book would ya? Some of us hunt in something called "bush".....you know, the REAL kind that doesn't end 1/2 an acre over? Yeah...it's called the boreal.....you might want to look it up. Then again, feel free to bring your 26" barreled, 12X scope mounted, loooong distance "don't like to stalk" wonder gun and spend a few hours humping it through some of our cedar bottoms.....see how long it takes you to appreciate that different locations call for specialized equipmment.

Some peoples children.......

NO - I have never road hunted my Frontier yet and most definitely it is not a truck gun - though it would be a good one for that and is quite handy when travelling in a space limited truck cab. In fact I have a few favoured and well used 16" tube hunting rifles. They are real handy when scouting, carrying buckets, climbing treestands, hunting from cramped treestands, digging thru tangle most of a day and such. For me shorty carbines do the job as good or better when its trigger time too.

But I would say pick a calibre however that doesn't lose too much in a 16" tube - only you can decide that. A 264Mag, as gunrunner8 commented, would seem contrary to the spirit and typical use for these little rifles - the extreme "over bore" becoming a significant handicap.

Interestingly however, there are more than a few who feel ther 300WSM Frontiers are perfection for them and that they don't give up too much velocity in their estimation in a short tube. I accept their reports. Yet for my hunting style I prefer an "uber carbine" cartridge with "in close" thump - the 358Win (Frontier)and 35Rem (trapper lever) are several of my favourites. The expansion ratio of those cartridges allows better use of a 16" long launching pad I believe.

More and more lately, my rifles with barrels longer than 20" don't get out hunting much with me - may be an "easterner" thing. My "go to" hunting guns are carbines. Also, even though "shortlegged", when properly handloaded and sighted in, most of my carbines have been trained to reach out a ways too - if called upon for that.

Excellent post and thats exactly why my 358 Frontier is a keeper ! :)

Bought one in .223 a little while ago. Now I want one in .308. After break-in and sight-in with the new scope I found the accuracy acceptable. 1st shot hits on gophers between 110-120m on a consistent basis. I don't think that I require a lot more than that for accuracy. It's so handy that it's just the first thing I grab for the Quad or the truck. Coyotes where I live have learned to beware of my compact.

Where could I buy a new one in 223?

Picked mine up, stainless, laminate at wholesale sports in Edmonton. They had it in .243 as well, but I had .223 around from my mini-14 fiasco so I went with that caliber. To be honest, it was a little more than I wanted to pay for a "fun gun" but it's a decision that I don't regret.

I have a stainless laminate one in 7mm-08. I got it with the intention of using it when crawling through kilometers of coulees, looking for mule deer. It has a bit more kick than a full size gun (recoil pad is not the best either). However, it is lightweight and fast handling which is exactly what I wanted - this is not meant to be a range gun. I can't wait to take it out this season.

I absolutely love my Ruger Frontier 308. Light, accurate, surprisingly little recoil and it got me my 2 first deer. Because of it, the thought of carrying my remington 700 30-06 with 24" barrel makes me cringe.

to the top for a great little gun!!

I just secured a 358 win frontier for this seasons deer hunt...I just have to pay for it now!! See my for sale ads for further details. She will be wearing a leupold scout scope.

Hey juanvaldez - you goin to install a Siler lock on it to be sporting:D.

Once ya get a taste for those 35s you'll be hooked. Should thump deer on the island pretty well. I've yet to get first blood on my 358Frontier but that'll come.

Here's a 100 and 200 yd target I fired a week or so ago with a cheap banner (oh the shame) 2.5x scope with a command post and playing with a couple of powder charges. Not tack driving but moose medicine just the same. 2400MV and very consistent velocities.

Now....if I could just get one of the new Hawkeye compacts in .338 fed I'd be a happy camper.......

I can get one for you(we had one in stock with the 358's but it sold the day we listed), however, I can't get the same 'deal' and it would be a few weeks and $1049 as opposed to 'in stock' and $799 for the 358. :(
