VZ-58 problem

OK. This is my second VZ, so I am somewhat familiar with the VZ-58. Anyways, my problems began with the purchase of a VZ-58 from a reputable dealer, who I will not name, because this isn't the dealer's fault, and I;ve dealt with them before with absolutely no problems. When I took the rifle apart to clean it, I noticed that it had been used, and not just a little. There was powder residue everywhere, the piston face was pretty rough and some of the springs had rust spots.

The main problem is the following:
The bolt carrier will only cycle back and forth if the selector is on SAFE. On FIRE, the bolt carrier will only go half way forward. The trigger can be pulled and go "click", but intil it is put on SAFE, the bolt carrier just stays there. I have disassembled it, cleaned it thouroughly, lubricated it well, and still no cycling unless on SAFE. Can somebody please explain what the hell is going on here, or am I just an idiot who is missing something obvious?

If its a good dealer then the dealer should be willing to replace the rifle for one in better shape or return your money.

Can you strip out the carrier and dust cover and take a pic of the inside of the action?

I presume you bought this rifle as new. If so, frankly, I would not even try to repair issues and request a NEW replacement. This may have been a warranty rifle sent back and just got mixed in with the sale rifles. I do try to give people the benefit of the doubt. I bought a rifle from one of our sponsors, shipped to me. There was major issues with the rifle (milsurp) and the dealer was more than happy to rectify the situation, offering me a number of options to make things right.
 
Is that one of the ones that Marstar brought in? I have never seen one that looked like that on the inside.

Maybe its just the pics but that looks like rust inside? If so you need to either talk to your dealer or clean it out. I've seen rifles with thousands of rounds that still look brand new inside. I honestly don't know what to say.

If you were sold this rifle as a new or nearly new gun I would be throwing a fit.

I can see significant wear on the dust cover pin too.

I've got 10's of K's and it looks better than that..

I think it's either been neglected (corrosion) and heavily cleaned or it's a refurb surplus and has been around.

Either way it's not new, I'd ask for a replacement. If there wasn't the selector problem I'd just ask for some $$ back. These guns really get rocking after about 10k rnds. The bearing surfaces get nice and slick.

Hows the bore?
 
the problem is any easy fix, if you can't return it. What is causing your problem is the disconnector lump is a bit too tall or has a burr on it, take a piece of 240 or so sandpaper and polish the rear side of it, also try polishing the bottom of carrier where it strikes the disconnector.
 
do you have a tiny loose spring that goes in the trigger that keeps the trigger bottom part forward ?
 
OK I'm gonna ask the dealer for an exchange.
BTW the receiver looks a lot worse in the pictures than in reality. I have a lot of gun grease covering the surface which makes it look even rougher.

Take your new one appart when you get it, good coat of break free or CLP over all the parts...let her sit for a bit. Wipe it all down... then apply a thin layer of CLP. If your replacement is brand new, you want to take those steps to ensure a slick break in.....

Just my 2 cents... CLP is awsome on firearms.
 
All the restricted ones from marstar that I have worked on were like this, they filled the front with a block and welded the #### out of them, the heat and splater takes it's toll. most of the ones that I saw new looked like they were welded and then assembled and shipped, most had rust starting as the spots that were welded were not refinished. that said I think most were from the first shipment, and the fact that they were only like 350 made me think they were used CAs.
