I just thought I’d post this fun little photo I took this morning well playing with my camera and a few of my milsurps. Though my primary focus is on Lee Enfields and US arms I find myself drawn to these rare un-issued examples. All 5 are original un-issued numbers matching examples and with one exception are known to be unfired beyond any proof testing they may have had before leaving the factory.
So from the top:
1943 Savage No4Mk1*
1947 BSA No5Mk1
1956(?) MAS Mle 1936-51
1953 Polish Mosin Nagant M44
55/56 SKS45

If you havent fired them recently, how do you know they still work?
Get out there and warm them up, man!;)

At least they are out of the wraps and not some firewoods & rusty pipes masquerading as shooting irons.

They work just fine ;) Every time I go into my gun room and see them hanging on the wall I smile every time. Besides if the haven’t been fired in years how would they have an opportunity to break?
Seriously though I have so many shoot able examples of them that I have no need to de-value them by 30% just to take the first shot. In the case of the MAS I’m not really awash in 7.5 MAS ammo but the Mosin may be the one exception. I have several hundred rounds of 7.62x54R to use up and try as I might they don’t fit in any of my Enfields.
BSA made a No5 ?
Yep…. It’s marked M47C. They made them up until late 1947. incidentally when the British government canceled the contract for the No5 they had a large number of unfinished receivers which they used up producing the No.8 22rf training rifle for New Zealand.

Your missing the Mint action cover for the MAS Mle 1936-51. BTW the date of manuf is on the stock on the left hand side.

Other than No4 MkI and No4 MKII rifles, I've never seen any of the above rifles "new in the wrap".

I've seen only one No4 MkI wrapped and lots of No4 MkII rifles wrapped. I've seen crates of No4 MkI* rifles, brand new in the grease and unissued after initial testing and a few No4 MkI variants, new, unissued in card board boxes but those were exceptions.

The same goes for the rest. I've never seen any of them "wrapped". I have seen crates of new mausers in the wrap though, with neatly tied red or black ribbons on the muzzle end.

Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, I am under the impression that most countries stored their war stores in crates with a thin coat of cosmoline for easy rapid deployment. They may have packaged up a few, like some of the Savage rifles that have been showing up recently but they may once have been CMP rifles or maybe DCRA.

I should add, those are very nice looking rifles. Like you, I wouldn't shoot them either. There are to many others out there that will give me the same experience.

I vaguely remember the un-issued Polish M44s were wrapped in heavy brown wax papers. But my memory is regressing these days. So I could be mistaken.

You are corret, they were in the wrap and still worth around the same amt of money.

The MAS Mle 1936-51 were also in the wrap as well.

I can't decide if we should salute you, or slap you. UN-FIRED. Hmm... How about a salute that strikes you? Still, I'm sorta envious. Sorta, because I love shooting my toys, and if I had what you have, or prohibs, it would be kind of frusterating. That's why one must have two of the same kind. One for shooting and the other for fondling.

Well in the case of the No4 I have something like 15 more with two of them being T’s…..and 2 Cno7’s. I have a couple of No5’s and 3 more SKS’s. I fired MAS 36’s in the past but that Mosin is going to get a work out I’m sure.
