I think there are only surplus tags in WMU's where not enough people applied leaving some left over after pool 2 draws. Not 100% sure on this but it is my understanding

well i know of 15b pool 2 apps that were unsuccessful and yet they say there is surplus both bulls and cows? does that mean those that missed the initial deadline to apply can now bog down the phones for these surplus? should go to pool 2 in my books.

I agree with this as well.

I stand corrected. I Agree if you missed the deadline you should be out and the people in pool 2 should have drawn the tag

I think they way it works is that you can only get one of the surplus tags if you applied for a tag and were unsucessful, whether you were in pool 1 or 2 doesn't matter.

Surplus tags are hard to get, we tried a couple of times, the phone lines open up at 12 are busy from 1145 till dinner when the tags run out. If your archery hunting you have much more success at getting surplus tags, good luck.

The surplus tags are available on August 17 from 5:30pm - 9pm only. First come, first served, keep hitting redial. They are not that hard to get, I know of one group that had 5 surplus cow tags last year...

Surplus tags maybe?

Speaking of which...our group of 4 guys drew 3 adult tags for our WMU...is there any way we could "bank" a tag for next year at all?

Arch, if you want to guarantee tags every year, apply as two groups of 2 hunters, instead of applying as individuals...

My question is, How can there be surplus tags in a WMU when there are pool 2 apps that were unsuccessful? to me surplus means everyone got one and there's still some left, yet many did not get one...

Don't know why they do that, but it would seem that if you are in pool 2, you don't count.

You can still phone in and get a surplus tag, and AFAIK they are free...

A person in Pool 2 is someone that either had a tag last year or is new to the draw.
For surplus, there are many Pool 1 hunters who were unsuccessful in this years draw, so it stands to reason that they should get first kick at a surplus tag.

Why would they have surplus tags if someone in pool 1 didn't get one? Seems silly doesn't it?

They should give one to everyone in pool 1 until all pool 1 is done. then any left should be drawn for pool 2. No need for surplus.

Also, as it stands, anyone can phone in and get a surplus tag, pool 1 gets no preferred status...

You suggestion of applying as a group would require my family to get along long enough to agree to apply as a group :p . Usually everyones pissed off at everyone and nobodies hunting with anyone...then they all end up going up to 21A  . 40-72 year olds and you'd swear they were 7...:bsFlag:
