I'm looking at the stainless one in 264 Win Mag. I really like this cartridge for longer range deer/caribou. Will the hawkeye likely have the accuracy to use the reach? Any thoughts or opinions? I've always wanted a 264. :)

Have it rethroated "normal" instead of the short Winchester SAAMI throat,it makes it easier to get the velocity without the spikeyness. The latest Ruger barrels have a good rep.

You need at least a 24" barrel to start the .264 on it's potential. A 26" barrel would be better.

If you are using a 22" or shorter barrel you might as well be shooting a factory .270 Win for all the difference it would make..... ;)

Id buy it as long as the throat isnt' Winchestered...not that it cant be fixed but still a pain in the ass. As mentioned, as long as the barrel is 24" and I no reason to believe that the Ruger is any shorter I think it will make a great Prairie / Beanfield / Tundra Hunting rifle. I used to have a Model 70 in that cal and I would try the Ruger next time....are they actually being sold in Canada now ?

I have ordered a Hawkeye and I seem to recall that the barrel length is 22". Time to check
Nope thats 24" for the .264 Win Mag.
22" is for the .243 that I have ordered.

That's good to know. Ruger has usually put 24" pipes on their rifles in "magnum" ctgs. A 26" would be better to wring out the better velocity from the .264 Win Mag, me thinks, though.

when i get a bit of time i'll measure the one we have.

10/4 Clay, let us know how long it is. My guess is if a person wants to go with a 26" barrel in a new .264 WM the Sendero or the Special Order CDL (which I know you have managed to special order in the past) will be the only choices....

How much difference in the throats on a 264 & what's the theory behind the different throat if I may ask?

What I know about the 264 throats is that winchester had traditionally set their 264's with a short throat that make seating heavy conventional bullets a real pain in the ass. I guess this was done to curb (and feel free to correct me) some pressure issues or maybe just because they wanted to sell Power Points .:)

I guess they figured everybody would buy their ammunition which was dual diameter power point bullets that allowed you to seat a 140 gr. bullets at a distance where you would have reasonable powder space. I still have some of that factory ammo (which was underpowered of course).

If you have such a rifle with the effed up throat you can find Power points if available or Remington Core locks which are also dual diameter. The real kicker here is if you are pushing 140's out of a 264 at reasonable velocities (140's at 3150-3200 fps)you would be wanting to use something a little tougher like a partition etc.

The real solution is to ream the throat to a proper lenght, not necessarily practical if dont' have the tools and live in the middle of nowhere.

You guys were right :) 24"

We have brought in the CDL's in 264 for a very few clients a while back. Not sure if we can still get them.
