so, I like the looks of an SKS with something like a 4x32 scope on it, so I'm thinking of doing that myself. question here is a) do I go with that $100 snap on kit from Cabela's, or should I get a second receiver cover and get that drilled and tapped for base and rings? if so, what scope would you recommend? :)

Receiver cover mounts are not well regarded. A drill and tap side mount like the Choate are a much better option. They don't have to be removed and unlike the cover mounts, won't require re-zeroing after cleaning your rifle.

The Choate side mount is probably your best bet, but keep in mind your cheek will no longer be resting on the (wood) stock when you get behind the scope. I got to try a SKS with the Choate mount and did not like that shooting position. I found the scope way too high. I'm glad I got to try a scope setup before I spend all the money. I currently use the tech sight with good success.

i just ordered the receiver cover type see-through mount
i didnt go with the scout mounts because i wanted to keep the open sights

i'll probably try it when i go to the range again.

Check out "Kalinka Optics.." they have the best solutions for scoped SKS ans AKs

AND ANY Reciever Cover Mount is a "NO - NO" unless your SKS is staying on the wall..:)) Good luck !!

Spend the money, save yourself the grief....

The Scout mount is a bit pricey but is supposed to be one of the best!

I found that the Scout mount worked the best. Quick and easy installation. Scope stays zeroed when removed, takes about minute to remove and install the scope rail. With the scope rail removed there is a iron sight built into the
Scount mount, you have the best of both worlds. The only thing that is a minor con is that you need a scope with a long eye relief 10" to 14" and under 10" in total lengh. I also have a choate mount, which works well also but I favor the Scount Mount. Spend the money on a good mount it will save you a lot of problems down the road.
