Cheapest 1911's?

Norinco is about as cheap as it gets if you're looking to buy a new 1911 style pistol. Next closest in price would likely be a Para GI Expert or an STI Spartan, or an Auto Ordnance 1911A1, all in the $750-850 range and of arguably better quality.

My .02 on econo 1911's..................

Or you can cruise the EE here for the usual bubba'd Colt or other mfg'er USGI models.... [i.e. refinished; backstrap tangs cut for beavertails; slides with original slots milled for aftermarket (target) sites; extended do-dads; rebarreled; aftermarket adjustable triggers (properly fitted or not); ad nauseum.....]..... Can usually can be had in the $550-$650 area.

But be aware of what you are buying, early WWI era commercial government or 1911 models have weaker steel than their WWII or later counterparts. There is a lot of documentation around cracking of frames +/or slides and breech faces around the firing pin holes collapsing from prolonged shooting with unknown source ammo. A lot of these old beauties were butchered up back in the day for "IPSC" pistols & the like.

Personally, I spend my $$ elsewhere... ;)

There are a few economy 1911 brands in the states, but they're not readily available here in Canada. The reason why is because the $350-400 norinco 1911's offer very good value for the money. I don't think many people will pay $500-600 for a charles daley when they could get a comparable norinco for $400.
If you want an economical 1911 get a norinco. If you want higher end there are decent options in Canada.

If you find one the Tanfoglio 1911's seem to come up used in the $500 to $600 price range. But frankly from having one and having seen a Norinco I'd choose the Norinco and use the money you save to get some work done to it. Or from all the praise I've seen for Armco Norincos just pay the small premium to get one of his improved versions. All the folks that got one seem to be very happy with them.

Count me in the 'happy with my Armco Norc' camp. Amazing value with zero malfunctions over the 2 1/2 years I've had it, and a trigger that's second to none. If I couldn't have a Norc, and didn't have enough $$ to have a gun built for me, I'd definitely get a Spartan (again from Armco - I just love Gunnar's trigger jobs).

I've got a Colt Gold Cup I got this spring Brand spanking new..... I paid $1500.

I also have a Armco Norinco..... it still has warrenty.... I paid $489.

Guess which one shoots better at the range....... The Norc!

Of course this makes some sense, the Norc is accurized and tuned, the Colt is still bone stock. I figgure it shoots well enough that it doesn't need a tune up.

I'll never sell the colt, but for bang for your buck.... you can't beat a Norc.

Cheers!
