Baiting bears

This is the first year that I am thinking of hunting black bear, and I have a few questions. First; if I put out a bait barrel, will that greatly affect the deer on the property?(leaving the property completely, just avoid the bait station as we still want to hunt for deer the same fall). The area is around 80 acres of bush. As well if anyone has any experienced with doing a honey burn. I would like to know if this is something that you would do early morning and spend the entire day on the stand, or just a few hours. Can this work as a long term attractant with a bait barrel?

Thanks for any info and help

Bear & deer inhabit the same bush. putting up a bear bait station will NOT drive deer out of the area. If your bait station is new & you want to attract bears just nail a couple of cans of sardines to a tree by your bait. The bears will come. Put up a trailcam if you have one. Good baits to use are; popcorn, sweet horse feed, cheap dogfood, whole corn, apples, used fryer oil, any baked goods, meat scraps of all kinds, & pour molasses over it all. If you can get fryer oil, pour it all around your bait, & the bears will track it all over creating paths that will lead other bears to your bait. Try to get a schedule going where you are baiting at least twice a week. I don't spend all day on my stands, just late afternoon til last shooting light. Bears usually come in late when it is almost too dark to shoot. The season starts Sept. 1st!

Get a trailcam if you dont' have one. Im always looking forward to checking the pictures when I check my bait every week.

Im also hunting bear for the first time this year and noticed that best attractant for me was the Used deep fryer oil.....took a whopping 30 minutes for the bear to show up after I setup the oil.

Yep all good - and a tip from years of experience - NEVER walk from the bait location to your stand - unless you want the bear sniffing its way up under you and right up into your stand. You are drawing the bear a picture of your hiding spot. I advise NEVER to do that. Walk in an entirely different way into your stand when ready to hunt. Using different boots than you use when baiting makes sense too.

Another bear hunter mentioned that a good source of bait was his local slaughterhouse. He said he could buy cow lips very cheaply. He would string them on a coathanger wire & apparently the bears loved them. Another good point that was mentioned in another bear thread was NOT to over bait. I put out about half a 5 gal bucket of food each time I refresh my baits. I have a load of apples I am going to put out tomorrow :).

Ill try and remember that.

I was visiting my bait and stand yesterday for a refill and just noticed that there is a well beaten trail to the bait that travels right underneath my stand  Im noticing more activity from the bears, a lot of digging and scat all around the site.

Im not too worried because Im 13 feet up on a good platform.:)

Pathfinder, take heed to the advice from Whelen B.

Don't for one minute think you are safe in your 13' platform, bears can climb a tree faster than a cat and can run almost as fast as a horse. Don't give them the advantage of sniffing you out!

Changing your entry route and your boots is solid advice, ALWAYS keep this in mind.

my 2 cents

Good luck with your hunt and stay safe.
