for those who haven't read my ramblings i'm shooting a savage 12bvss-s with a 1-8 twist, 26" shilen SS barrel on it, 75gr amax over 24.2gr varget, cci 400 primers.

went to my parents for the weekend and decided to bring the 223 along to see what she could do past 300 yards. i don't own a crony so i don't have a drop chart setup just the guess and check system.

so i took my brother out with me for a little company and as an extra shooter, we set up a target at 500 yards. drove to my shooting perch, moved the turrets up a couple MOA and dropped a couple rounds down range(note to self: use a better bench next time) after swaying like a drunkard i managed to let 3 go down range. and then drove to see the target. i had 3 on paper, 14" low and spreading about 6-7" not too good so we went back to our bench leveled it, dug the legs in a bit then moved the turrets up another 2.5MOA. so i fired 3 more rounds then i made my brother send another 3 down range at the lower target. and off we went again. this time i was pleasantly surpised.the 6 shots measured 4.2" CTC( i overlayed both of our 3 shots to the same POA)

so monday i wanted to get out a bit further and really stretch her legs. so i set up at 500yards again just to verify nothing had changed since Saturday. sent 3 down range 16" low?? at this point i assume my scope is no good and decide not to spend my time dialing in for a further distance. so i moved up another 2.5MOA and send some more down range, packed it up and gathered my target. not bad i thought, 2.3" 4 shots, but i wish i had fired a couple more but i was getting eaten alive by mosquitos. next time if i can get my scope repaired and maybe i'll have figured out how to sort my brass as well;)

6 shots at 500 yards.

That is a great start. consider putting up some wind flags on your target stand. If you have gusting winds, it will easily push your bullet off the target. The central group is great ("4 shots at 500" with 3 approx 1.5" apart) but the 'flyers' open things up alot.

Have fun with the load tuning. I bet things will get more consistent and groups will shrink nicely.

Money spent on good optics is never wasted.

I just put $900 into a Leupy LR VX-III with side parallax adjust (3.5-10X Mildot) and am QUITE pleased with it.

Don't be afraid to spend a bit more to get a bit better optic...

thanks but i use an elite 4200T 6-24x50, so not the best but pretty good. as good as yours anyway;)

Got to love them 223
Crout try some more varget and 75gr Bergers or 80grs might get pleasantly surprised, with your repaired scope.
