U.S ammo requirements

So to sum up for people......

Citizenship does not mean anything.

What you use to do years ago is irrelevent.

You can not export...that means take out of the US...ammunition without the proper paperwork...

You can import into Canada ammunition according to Canadian regs...however you can not legally export...take it out of the US...without paperwork.

The Canada Customs personal importation amounts are not the problem....US regulations are.

You risk confiscation and a ban from entry into the US if you are caught illegally exporting ammunition...

Regular exportation checks are being conducted at the US borders...

Any questions?

How and where can we get the Export Permit.
Thanks.

My only issue here, is Homeland Security folks waiting for you up the road in Canada. I'm seeing lots of anectdotal evidence on this website that they are following Canucks beyond their border, and playing the role of "wannabe police". Mostly gun nutz stopping in the likes of Cabela's, even if they didn't buy anything.

I'd tell them to get the f*ck out of my face, and get the hell back on their side of the border.

You had your chance to create a commotion at the border, now it's too goddam late.

Now before anyone sprouts off "you're going to go to jail!!!", I'll remind them that I don't advocate smuggling ammo across the border. As well, as a Canadian, my charter of rights relieves me of unwarranted persecution from ILLEGAL police, and detainment without cause. "We saw you go in Cabela's, so we think that..."

NO! Full-stop RIGHT THERE! "We think" is NOT acceptable police behaviour, according to our laws. Use your rights folks, or lose them!

Homeland is NOT canadian legislated police! This is EASILY "winnable" in court. Inter-country co-op agreements have NO charter grounds. At best, they can give you a US court date - of which you don't ever need to attend, of course, you'd lose any chance of going back to the states (duh).

Oh yes, but I'm specifically speaking of the HS guys roaming inside our country.

I mean, I know our border controls going south are near-hopeless, but coming up, do your checking in your own country...

Where have you seen Homeland Security operating in Canada? This is not something I have ever heard of. They have no jurisdiction or authority to operate outside the USA. I know that they are often doing export checks on their side of the border here in BC.....but not in Canada.

They have pre-clearance for passengers on flights departing for the United States.

An excellent idea, IMO. Canada, IMO, should negotiate the same access in every country that we can; it would definitely reduce the number of false refugee claimants running around for the two plus years that it takes to process them after they arrive, the claimant having destroyed all documentation on the flight and claiming grave danger should they ever return to wherever they claim to have came from.

The Americans have the right idea with international pre-clearance.

...CBP will display the posters at all 126 entries along the border and at immigration pre-clearance sites CBP operates at Canadian international airports in Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver and Winnipeg...

... you might get a warning, who knows, i will personally continue to bring ammo accross the border everytime i go down with no permit

If you get the chance, say a big hello to CGN member Ned Gerblanski, when you pass through on your way to remand, he and his CBP/ICE buddies work the Northern WA State line. That mountain rifle I imported(from a tip he gave me) is sweet.

What are you talking about? CPB dosn't operate inside of Canada unless they are doing Preclearance at airports or Railroads etc, or are part of a Joint task force with Canadian authorities.

are they going to confiscate a front bead sight for a shotgun too? LOL :)

Yes, if that item needs an export licence....

The checks stops for exportation are situationed past the US border post but still in US territory. There is usually a distance between the border crossing posts rather than being exactly on the border. So Homeland security is not patroling Canada...not sure where you got this...

ok then u gun nutz seem to know alot bout crossing the border with ammo!

can the average citizen obtain one of these import certificates or what ever they are for a lousy 1000 rounds of ammo or is getting one of these kinda like wanting your prohibited gun licence in the year 2009? NOT GONNA HAPPEN!

can the average citizen obtain one of these export licenses without developing a headache like filling out you passport? how hard are they to get? probably not even worth it to apply for one? anyone know about this?
thanks!

I just wish with all these resources devoted to curbing 'Johnny Canuck' from grabbing a box of winchester 270 at Walmart for 9.00 'they' would have the 'foresight' to maybe put up a sign saying it is illegal to acquire posses if you are a non resident ( alien ) at places of purchase

You walk into a local grocery store/gas station, state side, and there are no less than a dozen signs proclaiming ' under 21 ' for booze blah blah blah , we card for cigarettes , dont drink and drive , and yet where you sell ammo no placards at all to 'advise' I dont have a masters degree but it would make sense to put up a notice................no ?????????

While ATVing with another couple about two years (possibly a bit longer) ago just west of Creston, BC we saw a US Border Patrol on our side of the border and so we stopped and chatted with the two guys. They were quite friendly and were studying a forestry map. I cautioned them about a very active logging show just a couple of miles in their direction and they thanked us for that. One of the dudes had transferred up from Nogales, AZ so as we Winter nearby at Tubac and Green Valley we chatted about where to eat, etc. I have no idea what they were doing and I don't even want to know. They would have been stationed in Idaho. I have heard rumours of "men in black" spotted by ATVers running around in the bushes in this area but nothing I could substantiate. This is the Maryland Creek/Boundary lake FSR and we ATV there a lot. Our RCMP quad guys patrol there now too. I have also heard another rumour of a nasty black helicopter springing up out of nowhere and startling the heck out of an ATVer but again no details. This road network parallels the 49th very closely and we are careful here......

Apparently HS sometimes stakes out parking lots outside of places like Gander Mountain at the mall in Watertown, NY (30 minutes south of the border) looking for people putting suspicious packages into Canadian plated cars. Those cars subsequently get pulled over on the US side of the border for exit inspections. Buyer beware...

Easy on the rumours.....totally unsubstantiated and rife with tinfoil. It would however be fair to say that the US and Canadian authorities monitor the border....
