Stuck Enfield butt stock

Howdy folks !

I took apart my Enfields for the first time yesterday for a good cleaning and oiling. I have a No4 Savage sporter which besides needing a whole lot of muscle to remove the butt stock screw, came apart fairly easily.

The problem I have is my prized possession, my Long Branch. Everything came apart with a quarter the effort that it took on the Savage, but when I got to the butt stock I encountered an issue. I was able to remove the screw easily, however the stock appears to be stuck to the back of the receiver. Before I got really trying to muscle it and potentially damage it, is there something different with a Long Branch butt stock that I'm missing here ?

If not, any suggestions for removal which has the least potential for damage ?
 
Not sure about your condition, dont know much about longbranches, but if they are like the SMLE's maybe the oil runnoff went into the wood when stored years ago and swelled the wood.:confused:
Like i said, don tknow nothing about the longbrach, but maybe this happened.

I wrap the buttstock in a rag and gently tap it all around in a clock wise direction, some are stuck pretty good.
 
Tap the top and then the bottom with your hand/fist, up and then down. It should work loose. I never use tools or hammers/vises, they will leave a mark.

I take my buttstock off at least once a year .
After a week of hunting in all kinds of weather , checking for moisture is reason enough.
I'll clean and oil the bolt , inside the buttstock ring and down into the bolt hole , and a good smear of BLO over the stock tip .
 
Yep good idea to remove the butt stock at least once.Last one I bought was fine on the outside and full of rust in the socket.Used nutrarust and then oiled 'er up then cleaned it off and used fluidfilm so as not to have a oil soaked butt. I'd just keep working at it with a dead blow or rubber headed hammer to loosen it.
 
I'll get the mallet out and have a go at it then, thanks chaps !

As for my reasoning, it's the same as Timberlord and millwright. I took everything apart to be cleaned and oiled, and the butt stock is part of that process. I'm sure everything is fine, as everything else was almost immaculate ... would still like to be sure of that however.
 
Issued Enfield’s were completely torn down once per year by the armourers for inspection. If you’re going to play Doctor you MUST give the patient a complete exam.
This means making the patient get totally naked. :eek:

Lets make this easy to remember, once a year at Easter you should always inspect your “Bunny’s” tail end. :D
