Hey, this is my cry for help to get into the great world of hunting. I live in southern Ontario and would really like to get into hunting. I know no one who does so and I don't wanna risk going alone and unknowing......too much can go wrong. I am intrested in any form of hunting, execpt bow hunting as I have no skill with a bow and would love to hunt just about any game. The hunting I have been interested in most is probably waterfowl or grouse and deer. I am still not the best shot yet so I think I would be more comfortable and better suited using my shotgun instead of my .303. Any help whatsoever would make my day and hopfully the comming hunting season(s), much thanks.:)

Im close to london,I hunt waterfowl, turkey, and am looking to try grouse this year, as for deer down this way its either muzzleloader or archery so I go at that with a crossbow.

Im sure we can set something up so you can come along on a goose hunt once that starts up, do you have your licences pal, H1 outdoors card?

Your .303 is useless down here biggest calibre you can shoot is .270. Unless you go north of the french and mattawa rivers I think it is.

I am a new guy to hunting to, my dad never did much but together we are learning. All I can say is that no hunting is cheap! Waterfowl hunting is probably the most expensive hunting you can do once you factor in, camo, ground blinds decoys shotgun, ammo, boat, waders etc etc.

That would be great, thanks. I have my pal and am taking the hunting course in 2 weeks.

Ah, true fact, knida forgot about that one. You may not know this but is there a place on the net thats shows you were in Ontario you can hunt, what the zones are, what weapons you can use there, ect? As being new this is kinda confusing as to what I can/can't use and where.

Hey, I'm in the same boat here. Just got my PAL in the mail and have had the outdoors card for a while now. I'm still not sure about the calibre restrictions, although I think its a town bylaw type of thing so it depends on where you are hunting. Also for places to hunt, i haven't figured out exactly how to analyze it, but if you google ontario crown land uses atlas it shows everything.

Good luck and lemme know if you get any info because I can use all help i can get as well!

ranger dave, let me know a bit closer to season opening and we can set something up,ill be hitting it hard as soon as things get going.

crown land maps are kind of useless ive found for southern ontario, I find gov land by checking out the conservation authority websites, usually they have lots of land and some of it you can hunt on.

Shall do, you living in ontario as well?

Hi Ranger_Dave
I now live in London but from the Central Huron County area. PM me and we can get together now and then for some hunting/fishing in that area. Maybe a little older then you but hunted that area 40 years and might know the odd area for grouse, pheasant, deer, coyotes and few others as the season moves on. Always happy to help someone learn the ropes.

Get a copy of the 09/10 Hunting Regs from your local Canadian Tire and it tells you everything you need to know about hunting and what guns and calibers you can use in the different WMU's.

Wow, I'm surprised that there's such a stupid law regarding the caliber you can use to hunt. They should allow bigger caliber, that means less pain to the prey since the damage is greater with higher calibers.

In Québec (if you can arrange a hunt with a GunNut in Québec which I'm not :(), you can use anything equal or above .243 to hunt big game. That brings a lot of possibilities! :D

Why they put that law in place anyway???

Why? Because we live in a rural and urban society in Southern/Central Ontario and most if not all hunting is done between rural concession roads. Do you want some idiot out in the bush 1/2 a mile away with a .303 that does not know how to shoot it but decided he would practice out in the bush?

Large Calibre bullets travel to far before they loose trajectory and power, that is why you cannot use them.

The average Controlled hunt in WMU's has 500+ hunters in 1 week or 2 weeks of hunting. Do you want 500+ hunters pushing a bush with .303's that shoot 2 miles or shotguns/muzzle loaders that shoot 400 yards?

thats only around the populated areas.where we hunt deer we can use any calibur

Caliber Restriction

In south central Ontario ( basically) south of Hwy. #7 and it does go by county by-law the regulations say the largest caliber allowed is .275 Rigby (7x57 mauser). The reg was put in place so that hunters would not be able to use surlpus .303 British full jacket ammo. Check the reg's.

By that standard, we should all only be allowed bows

Are you trying to tell me shooting a coyote at 400 yards with a .270 is any different than taking a 100 yard shot at a dear with a .308??

You can't cure stupid, and hunting regs will never protect you from an idiot in the bush with a gun.

You got a point there...

I went hunting nood once. Scared away all the deer, but one CO just loved me ;)

With all the bramble bushes around here and those cold fall nights I just don't think it would fly in my neck of the woods either. God, just thinking of those frozen aluminum seats of my Springbok canoe puts me off goose hunting altogether. Can't think of a lot of people I would want to hunt nood with either. You lucked out with the CO. (I am assuming she just loved you.)

Yep......I can't use my .44 Magnum Ruger Carbine for hunting yotes, but 6.5 x 55 Swede or .270 is OK.........the cal. restriction is utterly useless....and was only meant to restrict a huge # of firearms after WW2, namely .303 Lee Enfields, for being used to hunt with in SW Ontario.

Like you said, you can't cure STUPID:confused:
