Baikal MP-153 good, bad, ugly?

Has anyone here fired one? Do they function with 2 3/4" trap loads? I'm considering getting one, as well as a Baikal O/U, Stevens 512 O/U, IGA Condor... I'm not ready for $1000 stuff yet, and a lot of used guns are fixed chokes(got enough of those already). I want removeable chokes so I can set up however I like, and not be stuck with one choke. great gun they wont shoot the cheap walmart stuff just buy better ammo i think i would take a remington 11-87 for a couple more dollers but the baikal is still a good gun.

I like mine. It shoots the federal cheapies from CTC flawlessly. The winchester bulk loads on the otherhand seem to jam up fairly often. Hunting loads work fine. The fit and finish isn't great, but I don't mind as I bought mine for a beater/hunting gun. The gun seems to pattern alot looser than the choke would suggest. I use the full choke for general purpose work.
 
I have the remington spr453 (same as mp 153) and mine worked flawlessly with the cheap winchester universal from walmart and the federals as well. I used it exclusively for skeet, trap, and sporting clays. Thousands of rounds through it and never had one failure at all. The only reason I don't still use it is because I bought an O/U. I highly recommend it but be sure to break it in using the procedure in the manual.
 
I had a very bad experience( top barrel would not eject,screw in choke was bent and cracked,finish on wood started to wear off,filler in between barrels fell out, bottom barrel would not eject, Epps had this gone longer than I did in the ten months I owned it) with my first Baikal IZH 12GA O/U returned it for full credit, and vowed to never even touch another Baikal again. I have since only bought very high end shotguns, but having seen a MP-153 in a store it looked good. I cannot speak for its performance but guys in this post can and have. I do not know what they paid but $599 for nice wood, extended screw in chokes, auto loader sounds like a great gun for a guy starting out. Not to mention crazy cheap for people who cannot or do not want to spend a lot of money.
 
I think they're $499 for one with 24" bbl. (I'll have to check) I wonder if the chokes are OK for steel shot? I have a Baikal single shot 12 guage from the 70's, and I like it(exept the kick like a mule part), that's why I thought I might like a Baikal O/U or semi. I also thought they were supposed to be pretty solid firearms, but your O/U sure sounded crappy. I sure wish someone local sold them so I could handle one. The Stevens 512 was suprisingly nice, I liked it better than the Stoeger/IGA Condor. I don't own any double bbls so it's a good excuse to buy another gun....

Really $499 for a wood one?
 
i have Baikal O/U 27 em 1c.... great gun... has all the features of 1500 dollar gun.. but goes arround for about 500 dollars... (it has selective ejectors, single SELECTIVE trigger allows you to choose between the barrels and t has removable chockes) the only things that still have room for improvement, is wood finish, and maybe it is few grams havier then an expensive Shotgun like a beretta or something...
 
Elwood is showing the walnut stocked ones for $399 :eek: :rockOn: . I bought mine there (for a little more) and I love it. Clean it, follow the break-in period and you'll have no problems. If I remember the markings correctly, they are rated for steel shot.

If I were you I would look for a choke tubed barrel for your Beretta A301. It is a much better gun than the Baikal. Try Trapshooters.com you see them there quite often. Usually around the $200 mark. It's to bad cause I just sold one a couple of weeks ago.

Have you guys seen any of the You Tube videos on the 153? Like the one where the rolls it in the mud, then sticks the whole thing in the lake to clean it off, shakes out the water, loads it and shoots it, band, bang bang. pretty amazing, might have to get one at $399.00 from Epps. FS
 
I own a mp-153. Just break it in properly. Russia makes ruff stuff, just smooth it out. Lot of people are real lazy and expect everything to work perfectly right off the bat. Thats why you pay so much for higher end guns, somebody else smooths them out for you. I've seen em with 870 pistol grips and tube extensions. Very reliable and robust design.
