Old style bolt carrier hangs up on hammer notch

i picked up a used ar from the boards and seem to have a problem? (not sure ...new to ARs)

the ar has the older bolt carrier (like the middle one)

i know it was made that way so the firing pin's collar would hang up on the notched hammer. ....or is it normal?

mine hangs up but i can't seem to "disengage" it so that the carrier slides all the way forward. pulling back on the charging handle and letting go does not work and the forward assist will not move it any more forward.

what the heck do i do? ...or is it malfunctioning?

Yes, it was made to hang up, but only if the user attempted to convert the gun to full auto. If you just bought the gun and have no idea of the history, it is a very real possibility that the previous owner tried to make the rifle rock 'n roll, buggered it up, and sold it to you to be rid of it.

Remove the upper. With the hammer cocked, put your hand in front of the hammer and pull the tirgger and hold it back. The hammer should fall and hit your hand (avoid letting it fall all the way forward, which can be hard on your receiver and/or HOD). Still holding the trigger back, #### the hammer back. It should go back and stay. Now slowly release the trigger. The hammer should drop from the secondary sear to the primary sear, a distance of about 2-3mm, and stay there.

and that is where the problem is.

the hammer doesn't stay back =T ...is there a fix or replace the assembly? =(

yes order a new lower parts kit


(this way you have spares of all parts)

OR just get a trigger and hammer

Almost certainly the disconnector is missing, or the spring that drives it. I doubt the hammer or trigger has been messed with, but you never know.

Take a look at a parts drawing and identify the disconnector. As Battlerife says it has a spring (beneath it) and the disconnector should move freely but under spring tension. I had too light a spring under mine and it wouldn't hold the hammer, I'd get double firings and the bolt hung up on the hammer.
