What have you found... on a sunny day with a higher end scope, how far away can you see bullet holes on white paper @ 22X, 32X, and 42X? The caliber would make a difference, so don't forget to include the bullet diameter with your distance? I ask because I currently have a Nightforce 5.5-22X56 but am thinking of switching over to either the 8-32X56 or 12-42X56. I hope this has not been covered already, sorry if it has. Thanks all!

I have the NF 5.5-22X56 NP R1 reticle and on paper I can see hits at 300 and 400 yards, with a 308 cal.
On steel that I have primed grey, then painted with thick black paint, then painted with bright yellow, I can see hits at 1422 yards same scope, same cal.
Some friends have the BR 12-42X56 and they really like it!
The thing you have to deal with is mirage with the higher magnification. It really depends what distance your going to shoot out too.

I don't know the exact difference (beside magnification) between the scopes
you have listed in post #1,
but if you are concerned about seeing bullet holes
then the higher magnification is always better.
Remember you will not shoot on sunny days only.

With 36x power, 42mm diameter
most of the time I can see the holes of 224 bullets
(if they are on white paper) up to 120m if I have sunshine on the paper).

I can hardly see .300 holes (on white paper)
at 200yd with a 52x power and 56mm diameter
only if there is strong sunlight on the paper and if I am not tired.

However, I cannot see all the time the 6.5 holes on white paper
at 100m with 24x and 40mm.

But that's just me, my eyes are far from being ok.

That's not bullet holes, it is chipped paint... Quite different.
Chipped paint can be several times larger than the bullet hole diameter.

Your "hits" you say you see at 3/400yds
are they the same, chipped paint???
