Norinco NP-58: A Lot of Gun for a Small Price!

I recently purchased a variety of small arms for evaluation and potential use with my firearms instruction company. I conducted tedious amounts of research on the pros and cons on a variety of pistols. One thing continued to dig at the back of my mind as well as my wallet and that was, “why are the Norinco Chinese made firearms so cheap?” Is a result of poor quality and construction, or simply a matter of affordability? I have been chided by my friends and family over the years as being a typical Scotsman…..cheap! This however is completely untrue when it comes to purchasing firearms as I am a firm believer in quality costs! There are many websites and blogs especially in the United States that continued to bash Norinco made firearms as cheap, untrustworthy, unreliable and unsafe. I have always made a point to form my own opinions and whenever possible, take my own word over someone else’s.

Some other instructors and I took to the range with six Norinco NP58 .40 cal (Sig 226 Clone) to test for ourselves their potential. I am a huge fan of all Sig Sauer firearms and personally own a Sig 226 .40 cal which I primarily use as my pistol of choice. The best part of this trial is that after years of using Sig Sauer pistols I definitely have experience and a framework with which to make a comparison between the two.

As far as appearance, there is very little difference between the Sig 226 and its Norinco clone. They are identical in every way with the exception of the plastic material used on the pistol grip and the finish which seemed to have a more significant shine to it. The feel of the Norinco NP58 in my hands felt in everyway identical to my Sig 226. The one thing however that I did notice, was the decocking lever on each of the Norinco NP 58’s seemed tighter and required a little more pressure to activate then the Sig 226 counterparts.

When fired, the Norinco NP58 proved to be a formidable pistol. Out of the box sights required no manipulation to hit consistently on target. When compared, the NP58 and Sig Sauer had nearly identical groupings from the various distances and positions fired at the 50, 25, 15, 10 and 5 yard lines and were extremely pleased with the accuracy and ease which these firearms performed. We fired approximately 300 rounds of ammunition from each of the six Norinco NP58’s and had one stoppage which was caused by an improperly seated magazine. We checked the firearm over extensively and took it apart and verified that is was indeed operator error and not a production flaw.

We continue to use these firearms and persist in subjecting them to gruelling workouts on the range and still have yet to experience trouble with any of the six Norinco NP58’s we purchased. We would recommend the Norinco NP58 to anyone willing to look past the “Made in China,” stamped into the lower receiver. Retailing at most suppliers for $350.00 to $390.00 this pistol is worth every penny and more. If anyone has had any positive or negative feedback relating to this firearm I would very much appreciate your comments and views.

My experience with Chinese firearms mirrors yours, I either own or have owned 2x1911's, 2x M-305's, and an M4 as well as a few SKS's, and a couple of AK's (ah the good old days) and without exception they have been reliable, trouble free guns. The finish improves constantly and now the accuracy does too. Honestly, it's so bad now that whenever I hear people knocking Chinese firearms I just assume that they have no clue.

Two of my favourites at the range are my Norc 1911A1 and my Norc 1911 Commander. In fact I have another Commander coming from another Gun nut I liked them so much. Also as a Scotsman I resent the cross of being cheap that we inherited from an old Scot named Sir Harry Lauder who when he toured the United States as an entertainer, never once left a tip for any waiter, waitress nor any member of the hotel staff where he stayed.
So I wish people would stop cramming us all into the same shell as that cheapskate. I also love my Colt 1911 and my Glocks and even my M&P. Also my Rugers.

When we already talking about Norc's,i can post it here since i was thinking of posting a new thread.
My interest is in Norc.NP-30 double stack .45.Honestly there are lot of Norc's threads but couldn't see almost any on NP-30's.
Is that because they are a bit pricier than others, cause they are double stacks or i dont know what but they dont seem to be very popular like other norcs.
Can anyone comment litllebit on this,i am still very interested in them...

Really..... Is anybody "buying" this first post about a "firearms instruction" company. No where is his company name mentioned but he was sure to get in "Retailing at most suppliers for $350.00 to $390.00" . The Norincos may be ok but this obvious advertisement is a bit much.

My guess is that his company is "Northernspear" since his avatar is the same as the "NorthernSpear" logo

But I agree, his statement was worded oddly

I love my NP-34 (P228 clone) and my M-93 (Woodsman clone) never gave me any trouble either. I have no problem buying Chinese made products as I am of Scottish descent and I AM CHEAP!!! :) But maybe that's just me. :p

Thanks for the fact based review and welcome to CGN.

Since Northernspear does not sell these pistols I see no reason to disparage his OP. He is basing his opinion on actual use.

Perhaps the OP did not mention his company`s name due to rule 11 of CGN Rules because he is not an advertiser or sponsor.

A quick look at his company`s website did not show any indication they sell firearms, so his post doesn`t look to be an advert.

Welcome to CGN, Northernspear. And thanks for the NP58 review. Got one recently, quite happy with it and glad to know I`m not the only one.

Np-58

I admit they were very tempting when Can-Am had 'em on sale....

Just to respond to some of the comments. No this was not intended to be an advertisement. Some of the people who I've come across have asked for some information on the Norinco NP-58. It was a 100% positive experience and that was all the post was intended to portray. The company i am associated with is not mentioned because this was intended to be a review and critique of my experience with the Norinco NP-58. I am part of a company that teaches various firearms handling and shooting courses and I thought it helpful to share our experiences using this pistol. My sincerest apologies if it came across as a sales pitch as we do not sell any firearms. If anyone found the article worth reading, I will write more based on the variety of firearms I own and have experience with….if not I’m sorry to have wasted anyone’s time.

I received one of these on a trade and its as good as any of my other Sigs. It eats ammo like a fat kid in a smartie store and never fails. My only beef is that I can't find more mags for it.
Thanks for the excellent user review.
