Will chopping a mid length gas system AR barrel down to 15" from 17" have an affect on cycling or have any sort of negative issues?

Just learned that cutting my barrel any length, if it ends up shorter than 18", it will be prohibited. Better of buying a shorter upper in this case.

fyi cutting any barrel will make the barrel a prohibited divice, a barrel has to be manufactured with the sesired leght for it not to be prohibited.

That's not accurate. Just keep over the limit (18" or 18.5") and you are legal. In the OP's case, you are already too short to cut (or machine), so it looks like your options are limited to buying a shorter barrel.

But he is already at 17" might be tough to weld on an extra inch to it j/k :p

Unless you have the proper tooling to cut it, re-crown and thread it for a brake, I would just buy a shorter barrel. it is not as simple of taking a hack saw or a dremel to it.

Absolutely NOT TRUE ..............

I'll be more clear.
When asked to cut my 17" AR barrel by 2 inches, the gunsmith at TacOrd said cutting an AR barrel that's already shorter than 18" makes it prohibited. Cutting a 20" barrel to less than 18" makes it prohibited.
Buying a 14.5" from factory? Fine.

It s the same for a 1022 barrel right ? I want a 8.5 barrel but fabsport is sold out . i have a 16" stock barrel laying around and was thinking of asking a gunsmith to shortened it .

Yes to above^

you can legally put a barrel shorter than 18.5" (for semi) however it MUST be factory made to that specific length.

You can shorten a barrel to any length as long as it does not go shorter than 18.5" (so if you wanted to cut a 26" barrel down to 20" that would be perfectly legal)

So in order to get a shorter barrel LEGALLY, you are required to get a factory made barrel, made to the length you want.

ETA

Its a stupid retarded law, especially considering that a few years ago they WOULD issue new certs for gunsmith cut barrels... But it IS the law, and unfortunately we have to follow it....

Its one of those regulations that someone with their head up their ass wrote.
Its really funny that even the gunsmith is afraid of this stupid law when the CFC could NEVER EVER prove that they cut a barrel and rethreaded it.

Never in a million years could you tell the difference between a barrel that was 18" and then cut down to 16', 14.5", 11.5",10.5",10",8.5",8",7.5" so on and so on. You see thats how barrels are made, they come in long lengths and then are cut, profiled and threaded.

Why would anyone care as long as the classification of the firearm is NOT changed, ie: any firearm that is classed as restricted can have any length barrel as long as its over 106mm, it still just restricted.

The CFC is great they will register whatever you want, they dont even have verifiers any more.... all they do is ask a few questions and then its all good :)
Hell even getting a new FRT # is easy

106 applies to handguns. I believe that a restricted rifle has no limit.

106mm applies to restricted rifles aswell (any firearm in restricted class has to have a minimum barrel length of 106) , You can have a AR with 106mm barrel and its still restricted if the barrel is under 106mm it would then become a prohib.
