Dearth of 7.62 x 51

New to this forum and soon to be owner of a new M14. Reading from postings here, I noticed there seems to be a dearth of milsurp ammo in the market.

With the immense popularity of this rifle, how come 7.62x51 FMJ is hard to come by unlike say a 7.62x39? :confused:

My guess would be lack of supply. Most countries that still stock 7.62 NATO still use it in regular service in light MG's or sniper rifles, ect. So there is a lack in surplus do to their being no surplus to surplus. As for 7.62x39, there is a massive surplus of it. Most countries are switching calibers, Even Russia uses a round similar to the 5.56 NATO round.

When you think about it, has there really ever been a massive inflow of 7.62x51 surplus?
 
Another issue is new UN rules, agreements and treaties and voluntary embargoes. For example, South Africa no longer exports surplus ammo, and while the 7.62x51 is not as good as Portugese, their 7.62x39 was awesome.

What are your other reasons, besides also having bad gun control laws (new) and lots of violence.

The scenery is awesome, so is the hunting, and the wine and the climate, and the beaches...

The Afrikaners I have met have been some most intelligent, yet blatantly racist people I have ever met. I've only met a handful so obviously I can't speak for there entire nation, but it was coloured my opinion of them until meet more that prove otherwise.

Thanks to all for the explanation. While I realized 7.62 was still in limited use, I thought their stockpile would be too much vis-s-vis the demand. I guess not :(

Being new here, I wasn't sure and thought I just showed up at a time of famine LOL. That being said, I assume my alt. sources for ammo would be:

1. Reloads (I assume one can't buy them so it's a DIY affair)
2. Win .308 (pricey)
3. Vintage 7.62?

Is this correct?

Hopefully to get back on topic here...

Sort of. Buy one of winchester, remington, or PMC until you have 55 brass from the same manufacture. In that time, set yourself up with reloading gear(If you can, a 550b is what you want), and crank out your own.

Reloads are a do it yourself affair. There is some remanufactured ammo around, but I have never seen anything larger then 223.

Vintage is a problem for the same reasons newer surplus is a problem.
 
"...blatantly racist people I have ever met..." Parts of the U.S. still is too. Even States that fought on the Northern side during their Civil War.
7.62 x 51 isn't in as widespread use as it used to be. Major militaries haven't used it in their PBI rifle for years.

There was a documentary last night, on an obscure learning type channel, that addressed Canada's UN role in the Yugo conflict back in the '90s. I missed the first part, but Lew McKenzie and the soldiers interviewed slammed both the UN and the Libtard government of the day. The show had a refreshingly different point of view of the UN and the Canadian government...painting both in an impotent, self-serving light whilst they abandoned the committed troops and helpless civilians to the whims of the warring factions...the UN definitely came across as the "new and improved" League of Nations which was just as useless as the original.
 
The problem stems from the fact that X51 comes from countries that don't need the money from selling surplus. Combloc calibres often come from countries who do need the money.
