As I promised in another thread re: sights, in this forum, I went to Danford Lake Rifle Range today. In that other thread, I gave a very positive first impressiom of the TS200 even before I installed the sight. The instructions that came with the sight are first rate.

My rifle is an early 1951 Tula refurb, not chromed bore, no FP spring, laminated stock. My ammo is the current Czech bxn 1974.

OK - Tech says to set up a target at 20 yards because this distance is the first X-ing point as the bullet rises to the sight line. It only took me 3 groups of 3 shots to be close enought o point-of-aim to go to 100yds.:)

At 100 yds my first 3 shot group would fit into a rectangle 1" wide and 2.75" high. I made some sight adjustment then did a 5 shot group again at 100yds. The horizontal dispersion was 2.75" and the vertical 4.25" with 2 of the shots landing within 1" of the bull's X and a 3rd out by 2".

I now went to a target at 200yds, with a black aiming mark being a 5" wide and 9.5" high. Surrounding this was a grey area 11.5" X 17" representing none vital area of the human form.

I shot 3 five shot groups. The first required some slight sight adustment. The second group, better but still some sight adjustment. The third group had 4 hits in the 5 X 9.5 vital zone, the 5th shot 1" left of the zone.:dancingbanana:

Moosetracker was at the range too with his precision rifles & witnessed my targets, not that anyone would dare question the Sly Old Fox and his 82 year old eyes!

In summary, I was elated at the quick results that I had obtained with my SKS due to this great peep and earlier in the week ordered a front sight from Tech Sights, the issue front blade too wide for precision work which will hopefully will cut down on lateral dispersion.

Someone complained about the 0.062" aperature. Well, it is perfect for me. Once, I had the peep contact my glasses. When I took a bit more eye relief, the aperature was perfect.

With the Tech peep and front post, the only other thing that I might do to this SKS is try a trigger job, if I can convince louthepou to do one of his SKS with me.

All in all, a very good day at the range!

SLY, after reading your review I think that I will try my as of yet unmounted TS200 and the front sight on my 1950 Tula.

I will be jealous Don, next time we meet at the range!

Mind you, even if I had a better rig, you'd still shoot way better than me :)

DAMMM!
Thanx god you live to far away to attend the SKS gong shoot's!
P.S. You think all those year's of shooting had anything to do with these group's?
:p

TKS for the compliment, we old guys need a bit of stroking once in a while.

As for the years, I started shooting at 12 with my dad's Mossberg 46B .22LR and a peep. When I bought my M12 BSA baby Martini .22LR ( see it in the rim fire forum) and it's great tang peep sight I was hooked on peeps, only used open sights on rifles not so equipped. I graduated to scopes but never had really decent ones, i or 2 exceptions.

My elation from the first range visit was the ease with which I immediately got on target. The only frustration was that I had not bought the sight adjustment tool with the sight (it is now ordered with the post).

Using a peep for me is similar to learning to smoke a pipe. You must know the principle of how the human eye automatically centers things. Same with a pipe, most guys starting to smoke a pipe do it all wrong, end up going to cigs. (Idea: I will start a thread on off topics on pipe smoking.)

Comments from Tech Sight ...

I sent the URL for my CGN lead post on this thread last night to Tech Sights.

Here is the reply from them-

Thanks for the testimonial! It makes our day when we get this kind of feedback. The SKS is a great rifle and when you get a good set of sights on it, it only gets better. I went to Canadiangunutz and read some of the posts there. It seems some of the guys were having trouble with the return to zero after taking the rifle down for cleaning. My guess is that they did not do a proper install. Over tightening the 4 set screws in the back of the sight can lead to not allowing a good repeatable position when the large cross screw is tightened. Thanks again for the feedback. It sounds like you are enjoying the sights and that is music to our ears. Happy shooting and keep your powder dry!

ts200 project with front post

Do it Dan. You will not regret it.

I have a peep sight on my 29 inch barreled cz452. It was a fantastic addition, it just drops in.

Ghost ring sights are great and very fast in target acquisition. The refit will be a September weekend project. Then I will try to get to Jim Bullock's September Vintage Shoot at Camp Borden.

emmab has been raving about these sights for years , the only reason why i havent already tried it cos i didnt want to cut the pin on the top cover latch but my eyes are failing so i will give it a try.

so the cheaper TS100 has two apertures while the TS200 has one , correct? i like the idea of two aperture .

I've not checked the web site today but unless $$$ is a problem, go for the 200. My rational, TS sell an upgrade to take the 100 to a 200! Must be a market for it.

As for dual apertures on the 100, I did not see that. But, I've used peeps for 60 years and I like the 0.062" on the 200. I see no need for a larger aperture. Think of the #4 SMLE with the great ladder peep and battle
sight.

BTW, thanks Curtton for your SKS expertese.

ya welcome, i just measured the aperture of my FN C1A1 rear sight and the 300 yds is also .062 , i like this opening too so you are right , just stick to the TS200 one aperture .

i have plastic lens in my eyeball due to surgery so normally i can only focus at one point, the rear sight is blurry, using iron hasnt been much fun but i just noticed putting an aperture at the end of the top cover makes the rear sight clearer , weird eh ?
