Have many of you used the Federal 150gr factory ammo in your .303?

How did it work for you ITO accuracy and consistency? Just soliciting opinions before I buy.

Its to use in a scoped No.4 (that was cut and sportered).

Thanks

Forget about the federals....

I shot a moose with federals once, the lead separated out of the jacket of the bullet DRASTICALLY reducing penetration. I will never shoot a federal bullet again. I reccomend the Remmington cor lokt of your looking for a top of the line bullet, thus the core of the bullet is locked in a copper jacket and it wont separate like the federal did for me.
But I shoot Privi Partisan in 180gr and can get a group the size of a toonie with one of my mk3's, at 100yds and thats with iron sights. You can also get them in 150's. They are a bit hotter and hold up a good inch at 100yds as compared to the winchesters. Privis are packed with more powder and you can tell when you fire them.
Post range reports with whatever your shooting, good luck!!

thanks

I have been shooting win 180's with good results. I wanted to try a lighter bullet. I tried S&B 150's (hotter) but accuracy was a bit erratic. I'll look for Privis. I know Milarm gets them but were sold out last time I went there.

Cheers

I used some when I first started with my No.4 and they were certainly accurate enough but I never used 150gr ammo for hunting, preferring the 180gr. until I started reloading. I have used Sierra 180 and 125 gr. Speer 180 gr. and Hornady 174 gr. for my reloads. I've taken deer with both sizes of Sierra and with what became my favourite, the Hornady. If I had to buy commercial loads I wouldn't be afraid to use Federal stuff, based on my limited experience of them, but would choose 180 over 150, if available.

I tried one box, once upon a time. Accuracy was probably OK for a close to mid-range hunting rifle, but otherwise un-impressive (2 1/2-ish inches at 100 meters). The same gun shoots solidly under an inch with 180 Winchester factory's, so I never tried them again.

I've tried a bunch of handloads in the same rifle as well -- never found anything that shoots as well as factory Winchester's. For the rare occurence when I shoot my 303's anymore, I just buy a box of factory grey box Winchester 180's. Works great.

Meh... bought them when they were on sale at Can Tire for $15 a box.

The bullets are .310 and they are slightly under-loaded for powder, as is most commercial .303 ammo. I was going to use the Federal brass for re-loading, but the Remington stuff is better anyways.

Accuracy is so-so in my No4 that can otherwise print 1 1/2 inch groups all day with my handloads.... probably 3 or 4 inches or so.

Slug the barrel first. Lee-Enfield barrels can measure from .311" to .315" and still be considered ok. Over .315" the barrel is shot out.
Most commercial ammo uses a .312" bullet. Sierra MatchKings are .311" Won't shoot worth beans out of a .314" or .315" barrel. A .310" bullet won't shoot well out of a .312" barrel.
Headspace ok in your rifle? Bubba'd Enfields are notorious for bad headspace.
"...Federal brass for re-loading..." Ok stuff, but it's softer than other brands. Won't last as long.

The gun shop in stettler ab (battle river sports- google website for contact info)sells both 150 & 180 in privis. they use to be $20 per box but in the last couple months i think they came up to $25. I always see over 20 boxes in stock when ever im in there. I like the privis so much that im slowly changing over to them in all my rifles.

I bought a brick of 5 boxes if Ignman at milarm for $14.70 a box a few months ago. I'm sure they are sold out by now but you could see if they are getting in any more. Its worth a shot, parden the pun,

Thanks guys,
My headspace is OK (bolt won't close on a military no-go 0.070").

I'll try them and some Privi if I can get it, otherwise stick with Wichesters 180's, as they do well in my rifle.
