Hi, I just bought a Rem 700 and I need recomendations for base and rings to mount my scope. I didn't realize there was so many different kinds. What works? The rifle is going to be used for hunting, and long range target shooting. I don't plan on taking the scope on and off much.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Nic

I have a set of Leupold (STD) rings on my 700, but it depends what you want. Do you have iron sights? Do you want to use them? If so, or if you want to save a bit of dough, go with the Weaver base and see-thru rings. If you don't want your irons, and want to save money, Weaver base and L, M, or High rings.
My opinion.

I have had a couple of brand name lightweight mounts in with problems compressing/distorting the scope tube to the point where you could not vary the power.

For a real solid hunting mount I like the dual Leupold dovetail bases and lapped Leupold rings or Burris Signature rings.

Long range target shooting and adjusting the scope usually requires an angled (tapered) base.

Talley are great. One peice ring and base is one less thing to worry about.

I also like the Weaver base with the Leupold PRW rings. Very tough.

The Dual dovetails are good too.

Basically I agree with what everyone else put up.

Thats exactly what i put on my 35 whelen 7600 Carbine!!!
Solid for sure!

prolly weighs as much too ;)

Never did understand the weight argument unless your in a competition that regulates it.

Loosing 5lbs off the midsection will do a world more good than shaving a few ounces off your rig.

I of course do neither. If only my gun could put me on a diet ;)

I like Weaver bases with steel Burris Z or B-Square Lynx rings.

NAA.

1) Talley LW combo
2) Talley steel rings/bases
3) Weaver style bases, Burris Zee rings, or Signature Zee rings.
4) Leupold style rings/bases is last for me...
