I'm just getting into the whole hunting dog thing and there is some information on here but as we all know, the search function on here isn't exactly the best.

So, with that in mind, is there any interest in asking the mods for a specific section dedicated to our four legged hunting partners?

Just wondering...

Honestly, I'm sure ther are some excellent trainers on this board but this is a great gun site. When I need dog info I go to a great dog site.

check out: versatiledogs.com

I agree with this, but sometimes the specific "hunting dog" sites can be a bit intimidating, and some are definitely not for hunter joe who isn't taking part in field trials....
gonna check out that site you mentioned now in a bit...I hope it's a gooder:)

Unless it's tightly moderated, I don't think a dog forum is a particularly good idea.

I like the Uplandjournal.com. A different speed than here, though.

I find versatiledogs, like a lot of dog sites, to be very argumentative and chock full of know-it-alls. If you don't have 5000 posts you don't have a clue what you're doing and if your dog doesn't hunt out beyond 300 yards, he's a boot-licker. Ask a question and after you have been fully demeaned, 5 people will take over your thread and argue with each other for 5 pages over something completely unrelated.

This is less the case with Pointingdogjournal.com, but you need to be a magazine subscriber to get access.

I use these sites to search for and to READ specific information. A 2-year sub to a magazine is long enough so that the articles don't start repeating. Join NAVHDA and get out there and meet real people with real dogs.

Havn't shot over my Brittany yet, he's just 3 and a half months old. However, we've stared gun training with a cap gun and bumper. He's really taking to it, he barely notices the cap gun anymore so it may be time to move up to the .22.

I've got a couple books on order and I'm trying to track down a local trainer here in Southern Sask.

I think some of those other hunting dog sites are just as stated above and for the rookie trainer its tough to get any answers, the new section was just an idea.

Hey, if I wasn't such a pessimist then I might say that it's a great idea. I just think dog training is one of those subjects that brings out the worst in people.

Did you order a copy of the American Hunting Dog Club's training manual? I'm telling you, it's a great book.

For shooting over the dog, I highly recommend some live birds - he won't hear a thing. I would probably wait another couple of months, though.*

*You see - that's my opinion right there - hard to take that without inferring that you're doing something wrong. You're not.

why wait a couple of months,...

I have a Brittany, he's just 3 months old. He has almost recovered from a bout of "puppy strangles" ($2,000 dollars of Vet bills later). He has some catching up to do but he starts his training tomorrow.

I am looking forward to the 2010 fall season :)

I understand where your coming from. Infact I think its due to some of those properties that make that site so informative. I'm not in competition, I have no one to please but myself. There are so many different styles of trainers on that board that voice their opinion that I could always find good infirmation one way or another.

Casterpollox, don't be scared to ask questions on any dog site. Yes its probably been asked asked a thousand times before but dog trainers are very much like firearms experts:
a) they love to help and b) they love the sound of their own voice.

good luck with your pup and now would be a good time to introduce your dog to some homers. See how dangerous this is, I'm giving advice and I know jack shiit about Brits. :)

by the way do you have a local NAVDHA club. You should get involved with those guys. Do it and you won't be sorry.

There's one in Saskatoon but that's too far away to be practical... I might be able to get some help occasionally from them but to be active on a regular basis is not going to happen.

For those that are interested, I found a really neat podcast the other day. Bird Dogs Forever can be found on Itunes for free and there are something like 50 podcast or more. Some video and some audio but some really interesting stuff on there. Check it out, I did and found myself downloading every single one. I sat in the backyard yesterday watching them while Radar played himself out.

Cool, I'll be sure to check that out.

but there are better...

Are they secret?

I like and use the green book, too. I specifically mention the ahdc.org book because it is hard to find. The owner of vom Meadowlakes put me onto it.

In fact, I recommend reading a bunch of books, good and bad, so that you can get a complete picture.
