American Rifleman: Top Ten Handguns

Any of you guys read this article? It was pretty interesting, especially the opening page which talks about their selection criterion and the limitations of a 'top ten list'.

A worthwhile read anyways, this magazine is a great little ancilliary benefit to a NRA membership.

1) Colt M1911, M1911A1 and variants
2) S&W Hand ejector revolvers
3) Glock Model 17
4) S&W Model 1 Revolver
5) Volcanic Volitional repeater
6) Colt Peacemaker
7) Walther PP, PPK, PPK/S

Interestingly enough, the 1911 won by a long shot (92 out of a possible 100 point maximum). 2nd place finished with 53 points and 3rd place with 41 points.

Would sure be a common sight "with cartridge conversion" well into the 1880's
Or even beyond.

I would think it would be on the list above the broom handle

There are actually 3 or 4 lists in American Rifleman by different authors. This is just one list.

The Registered Magnum was the original pre-WWII .357 Magnum. It was registered to its owner by the S&W factory and a certificate was issued to the owner. This practice was discontinued about 1939.

These guns are the direct predecessor of the Model 27. Registered Magnum is a collector's name for these guns, prior to the introduction of model numbers in 1957, the official name was simply the .357 Magnum

I think this should be lumped in with all other S&W Hand Ejector revolvers, as they are all more or less the same basic design. I would leave out the Volcanic, as it was an evolutionary dead end as a handgun. My two substitutions would be the 1851 Colt and the Tranter cap-and-ball revolvers. Additionally, I think the BHP and Glock should trade places, as the Glock uses two characteristics, which were pioneered by the BHP:

-Similar short recoil operation with no swinging barrel link
-Detachable double column mazazines
