In our deer camp we have a older gentleman that needs a lighter semi rifle. He has a browning safari in 308 but it is way to heavy for him. Please give me suggestions. needs to be around the same caliber. synthetic is fine, cost isn't a huge factor.
Thanksm, Bruce

I had the chance to fire a Benelli R1 in 30-06 the other day at the range. It felt very light and well balanced with the 22" bbl. Recoil was as mild as my .308 bolt action, and it seemed accurate enough ( I hit the 300yd gong on my first shot). At 7.2 lbs, it should be light enough for your friend to carry, and accurate enough for hunting.

Browning ShortTrac 308 is 1/2 pound lighter!

Browning Short Trac in 308Win - 6lbs 10oz put a nice 4x or 1-4x20 leupold on it with talley light weight rings and the whole setup should come in under 7 1/2 lbs.

I have the Short Trac in 7mm-08 on order and it will be setup as stated, hoping this will make a great deer package.

Did you miss the bit where he said the fellow wants a semi-auto, or did I miss the bit where Savage and Stevens started making semi-autos?

Why do you need to be snarky like that?

X1 on a Short Trac .308...I was pretty jealous that my buddies dads .270 WSM Short Trac Composite was lighter than my Sako Model 85  :p

It's not a semi auto, but it's short & light, a pleasure to carry and real easy on the shoulder. Winchester 94 in angle eject in .30-30 with a small scope for his older eyes.

And if he can't find that because it hasn't been made for a while, a brand new Marlin lever in
.30-30 at a 1/2 pound heavier.
