I just purchased one, making it my first handgun. I bought it due to price, look and the excellent track record of the 1911 .45 design. I purchased the Norinco 1911A1 'government' model.

So far, I've heard they shoot well straight out of the box, this capability satisfies my needs 100%... For curiosity's sake, are there some things to look out for with this gun? What would you consider doing to it... modification wise?

any input is appreciated.

If it shoots well for you, is comfortable and you are satisfied with it, nothing.

Many people replace those parts that may cause offense, like sights, safeties, and stocks.

Keep it clean and lubricated. When cleaning it, watch the barrel locking lugs for evidence of wear. They may need to be dressed. Consider replacing the recoil spring periodically.

I'd send it to Gunnar at Armco, have him do a "Norc Package" on it, when it comes back it'll shoot anything and feel good doing it - it'll be more accurate too. The package is a terrific deal, costing about the same as a trigger job, which it includes. Other than that, take it apart and clean it very thoroughly, they tend to come from the factory with a ton of nasty grit inside. Then buy ammo (or a reloading set up) you'll have a ton of fun with it. Mine is close to 4,000 rounds with no issues, and all I've done is replace the springs at 3,000 (it's a compact so I change the springs earlier). These guns are capable of good accuracy too.

Not to slag off Gunnar, but from what I understand you're better off buying a smoothed out Nork from his online store rather than sending yours...unless you're very patient.

I ditched the ambi safety and extended slide stop on mine. Other than that it's bone stock and it shoots great. My advice is to put a least a couple hundred rounds down the pipe before you start thinking about what mods it needs. Money spent on ammo is never wasted!

I presume you are talking about the latest Norc 1911A1 'enhanced model' with the ambi safety, extended slide stop & big mag button?

I ditched the extended slide stop on mine for a standard one. Changed out the big mag button for a standard one. New double diamond hardwood grips to replace the rubber panels. And I have an adjustable aluminum trigger to go in it. Being a leftie I left the ambi safety in place but I don't really need it either.

My .02.........
