What's the general consensus about Sig Sauer 1911s? Do or don't?
pro and cons? paying for the name or not?

yeah the look of the slide is the only pro i see so far for upgrading from my beat up tuned spartan

if i could only get the slide to fit the frame maybe I'd do so, maybe not.

Probably a good one.... but yeah, you will pay heavily for the name, too. ;)

NAA.

I've got a GSR XO 1911 (the "black on black" model).

Approx. 5-7k rounds through the gun. Completed my IPSC BB training with it.

Price: $998 (new) from P & D a year ago.

Pros:
  1. Very good frame/slide fit.
  2. Excellent trigger (once the firing pin safety was removed).
  3. Superior accuracy out of the box.
  4. Extractor design (external).
  5. Materials. All stainless with a black finish.
  6. Price. Compared to other 1911s that I've shot, this is great value for the money.

Cons:
  1. Sights. Not that the stock sights are bad. I've just had a heck of a time find replacement Novak Cut fibre optics.
  2. No stock ambi safety. Should be stock at this price.
  3. Looks. Slide design isn't for everyone.
  4. Finish. You get what you pay for. Some minor tool marks on the inside of the slide. Not as bad as my CZ SP01, but could be better.

I've had zero FF/FE malfunctions shooting (mostly) 230 gr. Aim ball reloads. Put a box of Winchester JHP ammo through it "just for kicks". No problems.

I've spent zero on enhancing the gun. I will be installing an ambi safety ASAP, however.

You can spend more and get less in a 1911. I don't think you'd go wrong getting a Sig. I don't think the name boosts the price significantly.

Just as an FYI: I'm looking to buy a compact 1911 (4.25" bbl & compact frame)... Right now the GSR compact is at the top of my list.

BTW: Is this gun for competition (IPSC or IDPA) or just for target shooting?

I have the GSR XO Stainless with the rail. I did not see any tool marks on mine, bought it this spring from Questar and I 99% agree with your acessment, Ambi safety is needed if you want to upgrade.

I still don't know, as I don't know jack when it comes to IPSC and such. But I hear single action for IPSC puts you in disadvantage. I'm guessing the gun would fall into standard? But I need adjustable sights and ambi safety, and would appreciate a trigger job to have it like my spartan. (maybe the trigger job would put me out of standard?)
for target i already have an heavily modified sti spartan

big fan of .45, shot bunch of other calibers, nothing comes close to the 45 feeling

Am I the only one left who wants his safety only on the left?

Don't you worry about it being inadvertently disengaged, E.G.: by the car seat?

I prefer single side safety. I'm ambivalent about the Sig. It's a nice pistol but it departs too far from the original for me to consider it a "1911".

I have the GSR Stainless Carry. Amazing right out of the box. Only con in my opinion is the lanyard notch. Damn thing is machined to a 90degree edge which is actually sharp and can cut..Other than that, its a beautiful piece to shoot.

to the guy who got his for 998$, well sheesh it sure has been a year since.
I'd be looking for the SS target 1911, msrp 1200USD, quester price 1548CAN$
gonna start collecting funds to purchase around january

I have an early GSR from the "second batch" (got it new just over 3 years ago) and love it. It has never had any type of stoppage and can shoot better than I can hold it. I agree with daBear in that there were a couple of sharp edges on the main spring housing that went away after a quick visit with Mr. file (notice the lower case "file" not the big one).

I am looking to get my first 1911. How would this one compare to a kimber that is just a couple hundred $$ more?

I'm thinking that in that price range I'd be looking at a Dan Wesson Marksman, more 1911 and less 'improved' and made with brand name, none MIM, parts. But I'm kind of an old F*rt when it comes to 1911's.

Not single action -- that's arguably an advantage -- single stack (magazine) is the disadvantage in IPSC.

A ten-round single stack .45 is more difficult to reload quickly. The USPSA (IPSC in the States) now has a "single stack" division as a result.
