Looking for Wife

Depending on the size of her hands you might also want to add Browning's HP to your list. Available 9mm or .40, very reliable, and the grips are quite comfortable for most people with small to large hadns. The reallyu large handed will wind them a trifle cramped though.

Oh.... By the title of this thread, I thought your existing wife was anti gun, and now you were looking for a new one.

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHA!!!! Oh boy.... I laugh so hard I almost $hit myself....

Whewww......

Anyway....

I would happily take her down and let her fit herself to a pistol... however, if you find Clyde River on a map... you can see why that won't happen for many months.

She already shoots rifle with me. She has a .308 Savage Model 10 LE with the collapsible stock that she prints 5 round under 1inch groups at 100. She picked it.... If I screw up I have to weave when I run, hope the magnification keeps keeps her from finding me....

The M+P was my actual choice as far as going concerns, and you guys pretty much nailed them all for me. She can shoot my 1911's if she wants to. And I have a few Single Actions, and she shoots them, just chooses an auto. I am starting to get picky about her getting her own because that way its up to her to learn to clean and maintain them.... Selfish, I know. But I think a valuable part of firearm ownership.

Can anyone suggest something with a thinner grip I just haven't thought of? Anyone shoot a one of the new Berettas or a Walther?

I still wish she would pick the SiG though....

If she's doing OK with a 1911 and wants a smaller grip than that then I'm not sure what the best option is.

The thing about the M&P is that the adjustable part of the grip is only the part that sits under the heel of the hand. The part up top where the thumb to forefinger part sits is still "one size fits all" and is fairly fat. And being a plastic frame with integral grip areas other than the replaceable part there's no customizing options.

The risk is that she'll find she's "just OK but not happy" with it. And while YOU may like the SIG it's even fatter I found. So out of fairness to her it's not really an option.

I hate to say this but one of the smallest single stack 9mm's you'll find out there is the Tokarev and Norinco clones of these. I've got a couple of the $99 specials and they are really small on the frame and grip department. I need to make up a fatter grip for my big paws to hold them better. I do OK with them but they really are small. Smaller by far even than the M&P.

This is a gun forum, not a dating site!

:p

OK OK...as others suggested M&P is a good choice...I might even be able to sell you mine :D

CZ 75s and Browning Hi Powers both have pretty slim grips. I put a pair of Hogue cocobolo grips on may CZ and the grip width is now slightly slimmer than a single stack 1911 with standard thickness grips.

That was my thought about the SiG's... but I haven't handled a 2022.... So I was hoping it was maybe thinner. Can you get smaller grips for them? I haven't looked.

I wouldn't trust my wife to a Norinco 99 dollar job when I wasn't home. You know... if that kind of thing was acceptable in this crackpot country.... And if that was the reason, I certainly wouldn't say it on this board or anywhere. Cause then I'd be paranoid..... I'm getting it so that she can IDPA when we get down south again.....

Anyway... I think I'm leaning toward M&P currently. Though it looks like she likes the XD... Ill let you know when she picks.

Thats what I figured also :D
, I would go M&P , as its not much money , and the 40 might even have less bark than the 9.:)

The Norinco 213 isn't suitable for IDPA, either, which is one of the requirements stated by the original poster.

Why not? Granted being that it's single action only it would be restricted to what class it can run. Or is it just not on some approval list? Sorry, I haven't read through the IDPA rule book so I'm just not sure why it couldn't be used.

Actually come to think of it I got to hold an XD a while back. As I recall the grip area was a little more thin and may be even better than the M&P in this regard. Seem to recall it had a hellacious heavy and long trigger pull though compared to the M&P.

I know I know... another "What should I buy" thread....

My wife is going to learn to shoot, and I have put a list together for her to pick from.

XD
M&P
Steyr MA1
SiG 2022

I'm leaning toward the SiG, because after 1911's, SiG's make me happy.

I made this list of available firearms in the "reasonable" price range, sent it to her and told her to research and pick one. I did this because she's stubborn. If I just pick one for her she'll always say she didn't get to pick and she's not happy.... This way she picks, she's happy, or at least won't admit to liking something else.

Anyone who has experience comparing any of the listed please chime in. It will be in 9mm as I can only carry so much ammo up here... and my 1911 fetish needs fed. heh.

she is not picking out what she like you have gave her a list of guns you like in hopes that if she dont like shooting you will pick up a new gun out of it ;) why not get rid of that list and let her realy pick out a gun she likes . have her come out to the range and try out as many different tpys of guns she can

The safety on an M213 is an afterthought. It would be pretty hard to disengage quickly. They might be OK as a cheap plinker, but not as competition gear, or any other serious use. If you want to go Norinco, get a 1911 and have it tuned and modified to your requirements.

Agreed. She isn't that gun "knowledgable" yet, so I picked a group that was a) available b)not overly expensive c)was considered reliable d)and were considered safe and easy to maintain.

Like I said earlier... do a Google Earth for Clyde River, Nunavut and there's why we don't go somewhere to "fit" her. Hell, I'd love to! Last time she was in Edmonton at the mall she shot the D.E. .357 like a trooper.

My most important concern is that it's something that she can operate quickly without having to worry about little things. Very close requirements to a "service pistol". I did add the CZ75 to the list for her. She's doing reading on each firearm, and I said if she finds something else I'm good for that, as long as I got the scratch.

NOBODY tell her you can get Glocks in designer colours...

Two viable guns that you haven't mentioned are the Tanfoglio and the STI GP6.

I suggest that when she picks up each of the firearms (from your list), she'll know.

I'm reviving my own thread with a new thought....

Anyone have experience with a Five-seveN?

Light, easy to shoot with good penetration and service pistol qualities is what I've read.

Thoughts?

Light is not always a good thing in a hand gun.

All of the models you initially mentioned are good. Why don't you take her to the range or to an IPSC / PPC practice night somewhere, or to an indoor range that rents pistols and let her try as many different models as possible and let her pick what feels best?

The 2022 comes with two grips.

As your desire is for the wife to shoot IDPA, jjackman's tip to rent/shoot at a range would be the preferred route. IMO the SigPro has a long and heavy DA which may take some getting used to. For a first pistol, the striker DA M&P will be much easier to handle and consistent on every shot. The XD trigger pull is slightly longer than the M&P. Let us know what she ends up with. For the girls its always the bags, shoes, clothes ....... for us boys its the guns!!! - Happy shopping! :canadaFlag::D
