Is this firearm??

This followed me home on the weekend after visiting friends.

Brief story is that it's one of a pair that were/are kept at a cottage and used to be used, about 30+ years ago, to make a bang on holidays ie Victoria Day.

The steel (cast iron???) barrel is 24" long with a 1.25" bore and weighs about 50 pounds.

Questions:
Is this a firearm requiring registration?

If I wanted to make it go bang, no projectile, just noise, what type of powder, and volume would be reasonable? Wadding etc?

Lots of questions.

DO NOT USE CABBAGE FOR WADDING!!! Or at least keep everyone upwind of it if you do. Had the misfortune ( stupidity) to be slightly behind and down wind of a well elevated cabbage wadded cannon not much bigger than this some years ago - burnt black powder "coleslaw" makes one hell of a mess when you try to brush it off your face and clothes.;) Kayceel
 
Nice find I use a 35mm film canister of single f in mine it is a 1.25 bore it was a 2.5 but the guy I bought it from sleaved it to 1.25 said it was too expencive to shoot as a 2.5 it is a Dixie gun works cast barrel with a steel liner here is a pic

No registration needed.

Just for noise , 150 grains of any BP , with a paper or cloth wad will suffice.
For real giggles , use the 35mm film can's worth. That gets expensive though.
Hint , put fuse in before compressing the wad onto the powder.

Don't do it where the ground vegetation ( out front ) may catch fire unless you are prepared for it.

I don't think so but then again you never know got it from our local gun smith he let me rumage through his old sites this one worked held it on with hose clamps as you can see was going to just JB weld it into place. I had a local machine shop make me a mold used a 1.25 bearing lathed out both sides then finished it of in the shop press on the bearing casts good just got to cut the spue of with snips and it was cheap $60.00 for the mold
 
1 1/2" or 2" styrofoam is what we use for our New Years shoots in the states.Just cut it the same size as the bore and tamp it in.
